As we saw the first snowflakes fly this week, some important reminders to take note when there is inclement weather requiring us to close school:
We will notify you via the One Call system, making automated phone calls
We will post to social media - Instagram and Facebook
We will notify local news outlets
We follow the Akron Public Schools for closings. As you know we are independent from them, and will still notify you separately, but when they close, we close.
One of our favorite days of the fall semester is Grandparents' Day. This day emphasizes the importance of intergenerational connections and the integral role our grandparents play in the life of our students.
Each year we invite the "Grandparents" (grandparents, family members, special friends) of our students to spend some time on campus learning what it means to be a part of the St. Vincent-St. Mary community. Important Details for the Day:
Grandparents are invited to join us for Mass and a Reception
Doors will open at 9:30 AM with Mass beginning at 10 AM
Students will find their grandparents in the LeBron James Arena
Please use the entrance near the Arena on Maple Street
Parking is available in the two lots across from the school and the lot across from St. Vincent Church
Following Mass, a light reception will be held in the Jack and Ann Haag Student Center
If you have not done so already, please be sure to register for Grandparents' Day. Register here.
St. Vincent dePaul needs our help in a BIG way to support their Christmas food drive. Our goal is to collect 3,600 cans of food.
How will students be asked to help? Just three times before Christmas... Donate 2 cans or $2 on each of the following days
Monday, November 25 - PJ dress down day with 2 cans or $2
Friday, December 6 - Ugly Sweater dress down day with 2 cans or $2
Wednesday, December 11 - Christmas Movie (Elf, Grinch etc.) Dress Down Day with 2 cans or $2
If we reach our goal of 3600 cans - students will be selected at random to "pie" the Leadership Team on Friday, December 13.
Adopt-A-Family is one of the most special giving traditions that we have here at STVM! For over 40 years, we have been giving gifts to families in our Akron community who are in need. This is a tradition that becomes a core memory for alumni and staff. Buying needed items, wrapping presents, delivering gifts, and receiving the heartfelt thanks from the families really changes perspectives and provides gratitude for all that we have and often take for granted.
This year we are supporting 12 families in the Akron area that have different challenging circumstances and could use our help to provide a joyful Christmas.
Each House will be given 3 families to help support this Advent leading to Christmas Break. Sign-Up Genius links will be out in a special email Monday, November 25. I will post them in the links in the Campus Ministry Irish Weekly, and I will also share information and updates with students during Morning Meetings and Theology Classes.
Please know you can help by:
1. Praying for the families and the success of Adopt-A-Family.
2. Buying items on the sign-up genius and bringing them in.
3. Bringing in money for the families.
4. Wrapping gifts before school, during study hall, and after school in the LRC.
Again, Adopt-A-Family Sign-Up Genius' will be sent out to students and then families via email on 11/25. All items should be in by Friday December 13.
Let's show our true STVM Irish Marianist Family Spirit and live out our Mission to spread the gospel by praying for and participating in Adopt-A-Family 2024!

This month, we join Catholics around the world in celebrating Black Catholic History Month, a special time dedicated to honoring the contributions of Black Catholics throughout the Church’s rich history. Established in 1990 by the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus, Black Catholic History Month shines a light on the unique heritage, struggles, and achievements of Black Catholics, inspiring us all to appreciate the diversity and unity within our faith.
November 3 marked the feast day of St. Martin de Porres, the first Black saint of the Americas. St. Martin de Porres is a remarkable figure in the Catholic Church: a true model of compassion, humility, and service. Born in Lima, Peru, in 1579 to a Black mother and a Spanish father, Martin faced discrimination and hardship because of his mixed-race heritage. Despite these challenges, he dedicated his life to helping others, especially the poor, the sick, and the marginalized.
During November, in a special way, we ask for the intercession of St. Martin de Porres -- a model of humility and service to others.
