Attendance and Arrival
On time arrival creates smoother transitions and allows children to complete morning work on time.
Late arrivals create disruption to the class and transitions become difficult for the children.
In any case your child needs to miss school, please be sure to bring in a note that accompanies them upon their return.
I will send missed assignments home via email
~ Please have your child complete the assignment and return in a reasonable amount of time.
Please be sure to send me an email or a note on the day of the absence would be very helpful :)
If you change your email during the school year, please be sure to contact the office.
Please be sure your email is not blocked by firewall.
Medications
All prescribed medications MUST be given to Ms. Christine (school nurse) directly.
Please do not send medications to school in your child's backpack.
Uniform Items and Labeling
Please be sure to label ALL your child's clothing.
~i.e., their jackets, sweaters, uniforms, Chromebook cases, headphones, gym uniforms, and folders.
I will have a lost and found bin for unclaimed items and if it is unclaimed, during conferences, you are more than welcome to take look and see if any of the items could possibly be your child's.
Bully Free Zone
SUS takes bullying very seriously as do I.
It is my job to not only ensure children are learning, but also to feel safe and respected within the walls of my classroom.
We emphasize that we are kind to each other and that we talk things out, clearly and respectfully.
"Clear is kind." ~Brené Brown
Homework/Homework Site
This website is my primary method of communicating to you all.
When your child brings homework in their SUS folder and/or in their copybook each night, they should begin where they left off the night before.
The date should be the first thing they write before they begin.
If your child forgets any book, please connect with a friend to complete the assignment(s) as much as possible.
Yellow Clip Folder (YCF)/ELA
Inside the YCF, there will be the ELA skills:
spelling words
grammar skills
vocabulary words.
Homework and review work will be assigned from this folder.
This folder will come home every night and needs to come back to school EVERYDAY.
We use this folder EVERYDAY.
I will assign the sections of each unit as I teach.
Each story and skills are taught for five to seven days.
Spelling
The students are responsible for knowing all spelling words.
Your child will be tested on current unit words and words from previous units each week.
Assessments will be measured through sentence writing, creative writing, and tests/quizzes.
Student practice includes applying words they have had learned previously to their writing.
Math
Children will have math homework EVERY NIGHT.
Please make sure they have their addition and subtraction flash cards.
They will not bring these to school but will be expected to use them at home when assigned.
You will see this on their homework frequently.
You can find flashcards at the Dollar Store or in the dollar bins at Target.
Specials
Your child's specials are listed on the Homework page
Please have your child wear their gym uniforms on A Days.
Please have your child bring in their library books on B Days.
Technology
Technology will be on D Days.
Please help your child charge their Chromebooks when it comes home and double check that they bring it back the next day.
We will use the Chromebook everyday as we move through the year.
The children will rarely have Homework using their Chromebooks,
~If it comes home, chances are the Chromebook needs to be charged for the next day!
Classroom Management
Children strive through independence.
Dr. Maria Montessori once said, "The greatest gifts we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence."
First grade focuses on building the child's independence to prepare them for Second Grade.
My job is to teach the children the skills as well as support and guide the children to implement the learned skills independently.
I believe in positive feedback and positive language.
~I will use language such as, "I notice how (child's name) is waiting patiently," and "Show me how we walk."
Independence
The activities assigned to the children are designed to promote independence.
~Includes: academics, play, life skills, and socialization
You can also promote independence at home when your child is completing their homework and long term projects as independently as possible... but this does not mean without you.
You will model the study skills that they will carry on for the rest of their school career and their life.
Your child will need your support to guide, check their homework, and encourage their success.
This process is fluid and dynamic
~With the right nurturance, independence will continue to change in a positive direction.
Birthdays
Birthdays are a little different this year.
~Children will be receiving Birthday Goody-bags from the teachers in the school!
~Children will not be permitted to bringing in treats for the class.
Please distribute birthday cards or invitations if there is one for every child in the class.
~Cards will be sent back home if there is not a card for all the children.
There will be a class sign up sheet on my Google Classroom where you can exchange information with other adults in the classroom.
Contact Paper
Please be sure all books are covered with contact paper by 9/12.
I will begin sending books home one at a time beginning 8/25.
Contact Paper is CLEAR.
Please send books back to school by the next day.
If you are unable to put contact paper the evening the book comes home, the book will come home again the next night.
ALL BOOKS SHOULD BE COVERED.
~INCLUDING THE SUS FOLDER.
Dismissal
Please email me if your dismissal plans change suddenly during the school day.
Please notify Mrs. Calva in the office in case I do not receive your message on time.
