Please share this video message by Principal Jenn Kirk with your child:
Good morning, and welcome to Sturgis West!
We are so excited to welcome our new Sturgis West families to our campus. One of the first tasks is to have our Class of 2030 students complete an in-person math and possible language placement assessment(s) on Saturday, May 9th at 8:30 am.
Please note, there is no pass or fail on these assessments. These assessments are simply tools we use to help identify the most appropriate classes for your child.
In addition to gaining this valuable information, we also like to take this opportunity to speak to parents and guardians. We know you might have a lot of questions and we will have several staff members on hand who are very informed in the areas we have found most incoming parents wonder about.
Below is an outline of the morning for students as well as parents and guardians.
Students
MATH PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT
Please come ready to test with two #2 pencils.
Students should arrive at their campus building between 8:15-8:30 am so we can begin promptly at 8:30.
Students will be escorted to a classroom where they will take a math placement assessment, which takes approximately one hour.
Once completed, we invite all students to meet some of their future classmates for a pancake breakfast.
After the social, students are free to leave unless they would like to be considered for a level two Latin, French or Spanish placement.
LANGUAGE PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT (OPTIONAL)
This assessment will start at 10:00. Students not considering a level 2 should not sit this exam.
Level one is where we expect incoming ninth grade students to be. Students should not feel pressure to be in level two just because they have taken the language before.
The vast majority of Sturgis students test into level one, despite having had two to three years of a foreign language at their middle school.
All higher level courses in grades eleven and twelve are available to students who begin their coursework in level one languages.
Level two French and Spanish at Sturgis is considered the equivalent of level three and even aspects of level four at many other schools.
Parents/Guardians
While your students are testing, 8:30-9:30, please join us in our atrium to partake in some light refreshments and meet other Sturgis parents, including members of our Sturgis Parent Association.
Staff will also be on hand to highlight some of our programs and answer any questions you may have. Specific staff will include Scott McNair (Athletic Director), Angie Cullinan (Lead School Counselor), Christine McDowell (Multilingual Learner Coordinator), John Newcombe (Assistant Principal), and Jenn Kirk (Principal).
Please complete this RSVP FORM and contact Rachel Todoroff (508-778-1782 x506) with any questions. If you are unable to attend on May 9th, there is an alternate date on the form. This form also includes a brief survey of our enrollment process. We appreciate your feedback.
Sincerely,
Jenn Kirk
