MEDICAL MISSIONS

The field of medicine is exploring creative ways to solve problems when it comes to meeting the needs of patients and communities. The medical field is using crowdsourcing, design, virtual reality, 3D printing, robotics, and drone technology to ensure that people get the care they need to live healthy, safe, and prosperous lives.

The challenges presented in the 2018 STEAM Games closely resemble challenges the medical profession experiences.

Prototype Challenge

Students teams will be presented with a problem a patient suffering from a physical disability experiences. A different challenge will be presented for each level: primary, elementary, junior high. Teams will design a solution and build a prototype to represent their solution.

Additional Details

  • Low tech materials will be provided to teams on site to use for constructing their prototype.
  • Students will present and demonstrate their prototype immediately after the 75 minutes has elapsed. Presentations will be limited to 90 seconds.
  • Prototypes will be reviewed and judged according to pre-set criteria.

Design & 3D Printing Challenge

3D Design and printing is revolutionized how the medical field can problem solve and offer care.

Primary - 3D printing is used to create realistic models for professionals and patients to visualize and prepare for a procedure. Design and print a realistic model of a body part.

Elementary - 3D printing has been used to provide medical instruments quickly and efficiently to locations that don’t have (ie. International Space Station, remote communities). Design and print a useable instrument that would be found in a standard first aid kit.

Junior High - 3D printing has been used to create casts, splints, and prostheses. Design and print a useable finger splint.

Additional Details

  • Entries must be created prior to May 24th. Teams will bring their creation to the STEAM Games event.
  • Students will present and speak to their submission at the STEAM Games.
  • Submissions will be reviewed and judged according to pre-set criteria.

Surgical Challenge

This challenge is for High School students only.

Medical teams are using robotics for surgical procedures that require precision.

Round 1 - Prepare a solution that can successfully retrieve and replace a body organ. Teams must “diagnose” and repair organ failure.

Round 2 - Prepare a solution that can successfully navigate and cut a nerve with intricate precision.

Additional Details

  • Student teams will have one attempt at Round 1 of this challenge. If successful, teams will move on to Round 2. If unsuccessful, teams will be eliminated.
  • Attempts will be judged and awarded points according to pre-set criteria.
  • Entries must be created prior to May 24th. Teams will bring their creation to the STEAM Games event.

Delivery Challenge

Robots and drones have started to be used to deliver medical supplies or lab samples to and from remote communities. Prepare a solution that can successfully deliver an object through a challenging course.

Primary - Teams can use a remote controlled solution.

Elementary - Teams can use an out of the box robot. However, teams demonstrate programming skill (not remote control).

Junior High - Teams should create a customized robot that demonstrates programming skill.

Additional Details

  • Drones are not acceptable entries.
  • Robots must not exceed 25 cm in width and 25 cm in length.
  • Student teams will have one attempt at this challenge.
  • Attempts will be judged and awarded points according to pre-set criteria.
  • Entries must be created prior to May 24th. Teams will bring their creation to the STEAM Games event.

Detector Challenge

Medical professionals are partnering with non-profit organizations to help clear landmines in war-torn countries. Prepare a solution that can navigate an open area and detect objects.

Primary - “Landmine” objects will be above ground. Teams can use a remote controlled solution. However, teams should demonstrate programming skill to indicate an object has been located.

Elementary - “Landmine” indicators will be marked on the floor. Teams can use a remote controlled solution. However, teams should demonstrate programming skill to indicate an object has been located.

Junior High - “Landmine” indicators will be marked on the floor. Teams should demonstrate programming skill to move their robot and indicate an object has been located.
