Brita Sheldon Sailer started drawing, painting, and creating images in early childhood. During grade school, even though she could write her name, she didn’t need to. Nearly all of her school papers were decorated with drawings of horses and other animals. Though she didn’t really get a grip on math, the value of persistence and practice in drawing became deeply embedded.
Brita grew up running through the woods and fields, afoot or horseback; staring up into clear, cold, starry skies from atop tall haystacks; discerning patterns and figures in clouds; observing and absorbing nature, creatures and the environment— learning to see and know her subjects and discovering how to share their essence through visual images.
Sailer has a B.A degree in Fine Art from Moorhead State University and served an apprenticeship under studio potter Peter Leach, a founder of Minnesota's Northern Clay Center. In addition to her ceramics career, Brita studied watercolor with a number of regionally and nationally known artists.
Sailer has also worked in photography, acrylics, pastels, pen and ink, and other drawing media. Her artwork is in private collections across the US and has been exhibited at juried shows throughout Minnesota, North and South Dakota, and Wisconsin. After journeys in some other intriguing directions, Brita is happy to be back in the creative art world once more.
