Farewell Interview- Interviewed by AJ Gencarelli
What drew you towards the librarian and teaching profession?
When I started my career, I initially became an elementary school teacher. However, once I moved to Westerly, there were no elementary teacher positions available. I was recommended to pursue librarianship, which I knew about because my brother is a librarian, and I never turned back!
What has been the most rewarding part of your career?
It has been very rewarding working with WHS students. I was also just recognized and won an award from the Library Champion Association for my efforts in protecting students' right to read! I am most proud of the library collection that I have spent years curating. The library has a wonderful selection of fiction, resources, and databases that serve our community very well.
What has been the biggest challenge you have faced at WHS, and how did you overcome it?
It was challenging to adapt and transform the library during COVID-19 when students were stuck at home. COVID made me realize that library resources, including an online library database, were more important than ever. We now have a schoolwide online library database full of research resources and library information, such as a book catalog.
How have the students impacted your time at WHS?
As a librarian, I really enjoy helping people and have always been here for students. I also enjoy research, so helping students with their research is my happy place!
What is your favorite memory from being at WHS?
I am always very happy when I run into graduated students and can catch up with them. A couple of years ago, I was at a restaurant in Portland, Maine, and a former student, who happened to be the bartender, went up to me and thanked me for being a big help!
What are your plans for the future now that you are retiring?
I am moving to Maine! I am going to enjoy my free time by taking classes and language courses, hiking, going on bike rides, joining book clubs, and traveling. I am very excited to live my life!
