Farewell Interview- Interviewed by Katelyn Arnold & Peyton Pietraszka
What drew you towards the teaching profession?
When I was a senior in high school, there was a senior shadow day, and I went to Tower Street School to shadow a couple of teachers because I thought it seemed like a really fun job. My anatomy and physiology teacher here at WHS, Dr. Joyce Fletcher, was an excellent teacher, and I was able to absorb everything that went on in her class without taking any notes. She was so much fun and made me realize that I wanted to become a teacher.
What has been the most rewarding part of your teaching career?
I love it when I'm teaching something that I am passionate about, and someone's eyes just go, "Wow, that's cool," and they become interested in it, too. It's very cool to see students soak in content and know that they may be able to use it later in life.
What has been the biggest challenge you have faced as a teacher, and how did you overcome it?
I've been teaching for a long time, and a lot has changed. For example, class schedules and the amount of time I get to teach have changed. I have always been able to evolve and adapt to these changes so that my classes stay fun and interesting and my students understand the content.
How have the students impacted your time at WHS?
I can teach students how to do things, but when they understand it and create something totally unique, different, and unexpected, it's amazing. My favorite part of working with students is seeing how they can build off of what I teach them and take it to another level.
What is your favorite memory from teaching at WHS?
Years ago, I took over creating a video show for the senior banquet. I love making the video, which is played at the banquet, and sending the seniors away with a memory that they will never forget.Â
What are your plans for the future now that you are retiring?
I'm not going to stop working. My father started working when he was 18 and raised us to work hard all of our lives. He is 81 and still working. I hope to keep working until I am 80 and I am going to go work with my father.
