You walk towards the chest in the bunker in which many devices of destruction lay dormant. You were never told of the curates by your grandfather, however he did say that they had a special purpose that would only be revealed after a lot of time had passed.
Your grandfather had a passion for the end times. Both metaphorically, and literally. He always found solace in the fact that all of the problems of one day would be solved the next. He loved to learn new things and use new technologies. That's why he hated having to live in this cabin, because he never was able to interact with new technology. He also loved listening to the complaints of the elderly about how everything is too complicated, or that the technology doesn't make sense. He liked it because he, just like you, thought he was above everyone else, so when they complained, he felt that he was on the right side of history, always pushing forward.
And yes, there were some technologies that weren't as good as he had hoped, but that didn't stop him from admiring the demise from afar.
He also loved movies about appocolypses. Mad Max, Armageddon, Left Behind, and many others. He showed a lot of them on the television that sits in your bedroom today. And after his death, you continued to watch old movies from before your birth.
