Your grandfather, the esoteric he was, carried a lot of technologies, and took the knowledge he had with him to the grave. That is why he hid a revolver that was fully loaded into every crevasse that he could. He knew that someday, some mad scientist or the feds would come for his work and try to steal it.
That is partially also why he built this cabin in the woods in the first place. That, and the need to conceal you away from the rest of the world. For some reason, he thought nobody would understand your way of life if you lived in normal society, so you just hid in the woods.
