What is the ASL Club?
The American Sign Language Club is a hands-on, interactive club at Green Hope that teaches students basic signing skills and etiquette. We educate students about the importance of sign language and its history in the United States and around the world. Our club leaders teach students basic sign language and any requested signs/phrases from club members. Our goal is NOT to teach students fluent sign language but to provide students interested in learning sign language, as well as those who are currently learning or know ASL, with a friendly community at Green Hope.
Many people in the world rely on sign language as their primary means of communication, and we aim to offer them an equal opportunity to express themselves in society by equipping others with the basic skills to understand them. We intend to achieve this by teaching students useful phrases in sign language and raising awareness of the subject at Green Hope. Learning sign language can be easier than learning a second spoken language and opens up entirely new avenues for communication.
The ASL Club delves deeper into the importance of this topic during our meetings. Students are NOT required to have any prior knowledge of sign language before joining the club, and we welcome everyone, regardless of their level of knowledge. Members of the ASL Club learn ASL together as a group and can continue their learning beyond the club if they choose to do so. We engage in enjoyable activities to enhance each member's sign language skills and provide further education.
While our club is based at Green Hope, we are part of a widespread sign language community that extends beyond Green Hope, and we are open to collaborating with other sign language clubs. Please feel free to contact us through any of the listed contacts on our Home page if you would like to collaborate!
