My name is Anders Benson, and I am a photographer for Free State Journalism at Lawrence Free State High School in Lawrence, Kansas. This is my portfolio for the 2024-25 NSPA Photojournalist of the Year competition. This portfolio includes five of my favorite photos that I have taken throughout my junior year of high school.
This past year, I served as the co-editor of photography for our school's yearbook, "The Talon," which was selected as one of 15 yearbooks across the country to participate in a showcase tour by Varsity Yearbook. Next year, I will continue this position as we create the 29th volume of "The Talon."
This has been my second year on the Free State Journalism staff, and I can't think of a better group of people to be a part of. Journalism has brought me so many unforgettable memories and friends. Journalism has also taught me so many important teamwork and communication skills. Throughout these past two years, I have enjoyed seeing myself improve as a photographer and a leader, as well as seeing others in the program improve their skills. Putting together the yearbook this past year and finally seeing the result was such a rewarding experience. I am proud to be a part of this extremely talented group of people and thankful for all of the work that they put into the program as well.
A few months ago, I was given the Photojournalist of the Year award from the Kansas Scholastic Press Association (KSPA). I also placed first in academics photography in both the KSPA regional and state contests of the 2024-25 school year. I placed third in nature photography in the ATPI 2024 Fall Photography Contest.
