The Mariano Marcos State University (Filipino: Pamantasang Pampamahalaan Mariano Marcos[1]) , often abbreviated as MMSU, is an institution of higher learning that is spread across multiple locations in the Ilocos Norte province of the Philippines. Its primary and central campus is situated in the town of Batac.
MMSU is in Ilocos Norte, a province in the northwestern part of Luzon Island, Philippines. Its main campus of about 300 hectares is in Batac, 472 km (293 mi) from Manila.
SIRMATA is the official publication of the college students of Mariano Marcos State University. It is the oldest existing student publication in region 1, founded by Dr. Sosimo Ma. Pablico.
In 2010, the publication conducted its first SMAP Journalism Workshop in honor of its founder and holds an annual gathering for student journalists.
In the early days of the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), its roots can be traced back to a significant moment in history. It all began on January 6, 1978, when President Ferdinand E. Marcos issued Presidential Decree No. 1279, leading to the establishment of this educational institution. This decree brought together the Mariano Marcos Memorial College of Science and Technology (MMMCST) in Batac and the Northern Luzon State College (NLSC) in Laoag City, while also incorporating the college departments of the Ilocos Norte Agricultural College (INAC) and the Ilocos Norte College of Arts and Trades (INCAT).
MMSU's mission was clear: to offer advanced education in the fields of the arts, agriculture, natural sciences, and various professional disciplines. The university's sprawling 300-hectare main campus nestled in the heart of the peaceful City of Batac became an ideal setting for educational and rural development. Additionally, MMSU extended its reach with campuses in Laoag City and the towns of Currimao and Dingras.
The academic offerings at MMSU were impressive, with a total of 66 degree programs available at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Many of these programs held accreditation from state university evaluation bodies. MMSU earned recognition from the Commission on Higher Education as a Center of Excellence (COE) in Teacher Education and a Center of Development (COD) in Agriculture, Biology, Forestry, and Information Technology Education. It was also one of the select National Universities for Agriculture and Fisheries Education in the Philippines.
At the time, MMSU boasted 11 academic units, each with its unique focus. These units included:
Graduate School (GS),
College of Law (COL),
College of Medicine (COM),
College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development (CAFSD),
College of Aquatic Sciences and Applied Technology (CASAT),
College of Arts and Sciences (CAS),
College of Business, Economics, and Accountancy (CBEA),
College of Engineering (COE),
College of Health Sciences (CHS),
College of Industrial Technology (CIT),
College of Teacher Education (CTE).
Spread across six campuses, the main campus in Batac housed seven academic units, while the others were strategically distributed among campuses in Laoag, Currimao, Dingras, and Paoay. Campus 5 and 6 were satellite campuses associated with CAFSD and CIT, respectively.
MMSU's story began with the fusion of different educational entities and a commitment to delivering top-notch instruction in various fields, ultimately shaping its journey towards becoming a prominent educational institution in the Philippines.
