I have 5 artworks here, for both of my classes.
In my first artwork, I wanted to describe a mellow and relaxed feeling. I wanted the lines to express smooth sailing and slower, lesser movements. I thought this would be a good representation of what feeling relaxed would be like. It goes from left to right in a wavy pattern, seemingly drawn without time in mind. They have more action than a straight line, but not too much.
In my second artwork, I wanted to describe excitement or Caffeination. I wanted the lines to express hyperactiveness and movement. I thought this would be a very good representation of what feeling up on sugar and caffeine would be. It outlines the major parts, in a chaotic-linear way. It has a lot of movement and action going on inside as well.
I think that my first artwork did better than the first. I successfully got a good grip on implied lines, through the wavy lines with indentations in them. The second one is also great, as I took shaken and jumpy literally. While drawing, I purposefully shook my and made random jumps of movement while drawing. I then went back over and applied a “Hair Strand” effect to them.
Both pictures are good in my eyes, but I like the first one better.
In the making of this artwork, I learned that Cubism can be expressed using broken shapes, and not just multiple shapes from multiple points of view. I also learned you can show different planes by using gradients, and it’s not too dependent on shading with Light. I also noticed patterns in my Classmate’s work, that can be used to draw your eyes towards them.
My work uses cubist style in a fractured glass kind of way. Instead of shading with neutral colors, I instead opted to use gradients for shading. I also used colors that were close to the colors of Danny Devito. The fractured glass effect is also different from some cubist drawings, as it separates planes with a border line instead of freely drawing warped perspective.
This artwork was difficult for me because I am not good a gradual shading, which is what this assignment is about. However, I think I did a decent job with it. I think I did the best with keeping the basic form of Danny DeVito, so he is still recognizable despite be broken into shapes. I also made the background gradients’ directions based off of Danny, as to separate him from the background. I accomplished this by having the darker colors next to his lighter values (His Skin) and the lighter colors next to his Darker Values (His Hair and Shirt).
The purpose of this print was to show the printing process. I tried to show hair texture in the monkey’s face, but ended up failing. I was able to show this texture by cutting strokes into my block to show hair. I chose this picture because it showed texture and was funny.
This is a reduction print because I printed and removed part of the block each time. Registration means the alignment.
Everything was challenging about this project. Registration, Getting the right amount of ink, pressing down on the print. I think i succeeded at carving my block.
This was for my painting class
The point of this project was to show linear perspective and to practice using watercolor paints. In my artwork, I show a 1-point linear perspective with windows, pillars, and seats. I used at least 50 individual lines to show shape, all pointing towards the vanishing point. I also used color mixing to make new colors that make the artwork pop.
My project is one of a cathedral. Seats line the rows of the cathedral and go into the background. There are pillars on the sides that go upwards, towards the ceilings, as well as arcs connecting the pillars, going into the center. There is also a ceiling with scaffolding in the middle as if you are looking upwards.
The most challenging part of this project was using watercolor. I have expressed my great disapproval of watercolor, as it is hard to get the colors to work well on paper. I did not like how the colors bled into the parts of the paper I did not want them to, as most evident on the left side. I showed depth a little better by using darker colors on the sides of the seats and pillars. I enjoyed the drawing part of the project, as pencils are easier to use than watercolor.
My sculpture represents 3 people. I am outgoing, Dad is shaped like his respective shape, and Mom has a very bubbly personality.
The form I have created is organic and made of rounded edges. The shapes for my parents are on either side of me, and without them my shape would fall to the ground. My parents are divorced and are only connect through me, as represented by the connection through me.
This was Pretty easy to make, though it was a bit unenjoyable as I sliced my finger open. I did pretty well with craftsmanship, however I did miss a few spots. I mainly struggled with the cutting part, as it was quite hard to get the blade to go where I wanted it to.
The Animated Film “Spirited Away” is similar to my sculpture in showing the importance of family.
In “Spirited Away” the main character Chihiro has to save her parents from being turned into pigs. In order to do so she must adopt the lifestyle of the new world she lives in, otherwise she will disappear and her parents will be eaten. At the end, Chihiro needs to pick her parents out of a crowd of pigs, and succeeds in doing so. This shows the connection between her and her parents. In my sculpture I show to connection I share with my parents.
On the other hand, however, the film does not show any problems between the parents. In my sculpture, my parents are apart, only being connected through me. In the show, however, the parents become pigs together through their own actions.
The Idea for my project was to make a sculpture representing me. The clock my face is on represents how time is very important to me.
Using foam core, skewers, newspaper, and tape, I made the armature. After covering it in aluminum foil, I started to cover large chunks of it in sculptamold. Every so often, I would take a break to smooth out the sculpture using sandpaper and water. Finally, I painted the details on.
I learned that when using quick dry materials, it is best to move fast. The easiest part of this project was the painting, and the hardest part was sculpting the face. This skill might help me in the future with balancing speed and craftsmanship.

The Artist I researched was Shepard Fairey. Shepard likes making a posterized version of political figures, such as Obama. Most of Shepard's artwork is meant to convey some kind of political message. Shepard uses a series of stencils and spray paints to make his art.
This assignment helped me learn more about using digital software to make art. My artwork is made up of 4 colors, just like Shepard’s. However, I did not use spray paint and stencils.
I think I did very well in most aspects of the project. The edges, the forms, and the transcription from computer to canvas were all very well done. However, I think I could have done better in making the colors even. In certain areas, there is a higher/lower concentration of color in their respective areas. My criteria were:
Can the person I painted be identified as me?
Are there clear separation lines between colors?
Does it look like something that Shepard Fairey painted?
Most of my refinements were flushing out the colors, or giving the painting cleaner edges. While I worked, I was complimented on “How much it looked like me” or “How well it turned out.” I used my class time very well, going as far as to work on it during my 2D/3D class.
