Expressive line drawing
The first drawings are very fluid and thin for the leaves surrounding the flowers; those lines are more descriptive lines than anything else with a few implied lines towards the top; the lines are mainly vertical with some of them leaning more towards horizontal. The lines are mainly thin, a mix of long and short strokes, and curvy.
The first drawing is meant to portray the feeling of calmness i tried to make the lines more wavy and less bold or thick because i wanted it to look like whoever drew it just kinda went with the flow and didn't really care to much because of how calm they are while
My second drawing is more descriptive as well with little to no other types of lines as far as i intended and could tell, the lines are thicker and more bold. The lines are vertical and horizontal; they are also sharp, jagged, hard edged, and mainly short with a few long ones in the mix. the second one is meant to portray the feeling of anger i made the lines more rough, sharp, and jagged like whoever drew it was really angry and pressed down really roughly and didn’t care about making the lines look good because of how angry they were.
I personally think the second one is more successful because I feel like I portrayed the emotion better in that one than I did the first one. I also think that the lines were better than the first because i accidentally made one of the first drawing lines more bold than i meant to and i had a couple more errors with that drawing that i didn’t have with the second
Printing project
The process i went through when making this was i first carved away the light pink areas and then i mixed a red with white and a tiny bit of purple which got me my final color i then went through the printing process and after that i let it dry i did that same thing with different carving and colors used about 2 more times after that. Registration is the alignment of whatever your printing on with your block and the registration paper
The purpose of the project was to teach us a new skill and educate us on printmaking and texture. The texture I showed was fur texture which is really fluffy. I was able to show this texture by craving the block in a way that will show the fur in detail. I chose this texture because I thought it would be challenging and a new experience.
I learned a lot through the project including how to print, crave, and use printing ink. I believe a lot of the project was really challenging for me including the printing mainly because of how slow i was when i was making it and because the ink drys really quick that caused me a lot of issues i also struggled with the due date once again because i missed a lot of school during this time which caused me to fall behind. I think I succeeded mainly in craving because I found it really easy to crave away and it also took me the least amount of time.
There are four people In my sculpture which includes me, my stepmom, my dad, and my mom. We are all pretty different from each other from how we act to where we prefer to be. In the planning stages of this I described myself as forgetful, creative, kind, impatient, introverted, and emotional. I described my dad as hardworking, loving, funny, strong-willed, extroverted, supportive. For my mom I described her as loving, patient, funny, sarcastic, hardworking, and caring. And lastly my stepmother was described as Hardworking, cold, strong-willed, serious, independent. I say everyone gets along fine in my family of course we have fights at some moments but we always come out of it more stable and together. My family doesn’t really have any sort of titles. I guess you could consider myself the “creative” one of my family, my stepmom the “worker” , my dad the “caretaker” and my mom also falls into the “caretaker”. I don’t think there is anything different or unique about my family.
The top shape with the multiple spikes on it is meant to represent my stepmom. I think this portrays her because while she is steady and solid she is also very guarded and sharp when she needs to be. At the bottom is my fathers shape which i used as a base of the entire sculpture because while me and my stepmom do get along he is the one who holds us all up and brings us together I made his shape more fluid at the top because of how emotional he can be but also have a sharp edge when he needs it. The shape in the middle of my dads shape is supposed to represent my mom. I made her shape a part of my dads to show that they were married but also because my mom passed away so I made it seem as though while she wasn’t there physically she is still a big influence on all of our shapes. And lastly is my shape. I made this more fluid because I'm a creative and emotional person and wanted to portray that. All these shapes represent my family dynamic because my dad being the rock of my family has both mine and my stepmom shapes balancing and relying on his shape for support and my moms shape as I said shows how while she isn’t here in person she still has a big impact on all of our lives.
If you asked me I’d say the best part of my sculpture was the shapes themselves and their design and positions in the artwork. I struggled quite a lot with the building of the shapes themselves because most of my shapes had some fluidity to them or sharp parts which made it super hard to get them to look right, not to mention stay standing and balanced. I changed the amount of spikes my dad’s shape was supposed to have because I was running low on time and also because I didn’t think that amount of spikes really fit my dad since he is mainly a soft and kind person. If I had to change anything it would be the paint I would’ve made the color something lighter and also I would have fixed the craftsmanship of how smooth it was because in the sculpture the paint is a bit chunky and there are still white spots.
The images above show my expressive self-portrait in a back and front view.
To begin with I practiced a bit with regular clay to get the feel of using clay and also designing a human face. I then started the building process which I started with building the neck and canvas with thin pieces of cardboard and tape. I built a square shape for the neck and just used a flat piece of cardboard for the canvas. I then used around 4-5 pieces of newspaper crumbled into a sphere shape to shape the head. I taped them together to keep the shape. I then started the sculpting process. I used sculpt mold to cover the entire thing in around 1-2 layers adding a bit extra to shape the hair, nose, lips, and eyebrows in the sculpt mold I added a hole that later served as the eye hole. Once I finished with that I started painting which didn’t require much mixing due to all the colors on me being basic.
I designed my project to look as if my head was melting into a canvas. This is meant to represent my artistic and creative personality. In my original plan I was only meant to be on the canvas to add more to it on the colorful and creative portion of it I added the melting effect and the extra colors splattered in my sculptures hair and on the canvas I also added an apron to give a more added effect on the creative side.
I have learned quite a lot from this project including how to design a human head, how to sculpt, and how to properly build an expressive portrait. I say the easiest part for me was painting and sculpting. I have previous experience with paints so that part was said and done and the sculpt mold was pretty easy to get the hang of and I didn’t have many issues with it. The hardest part by far was building the base out of cardboard and newspaper. I struggled to get the shape right and to figure out how much I needed to use to get the shapes to look right and it didn’t work that well for me. I might use these skills in the future if I decide to go down an art path in life and also if there ever comes a time I need to sculpt for a school project or a project for work.
