Description

This piece is titled “Mapping the Light” by Edward Hopper, also known for making “Nighthawks”. Edward Hopper was well known for being the master at lighting, by looking at his painting his title is no joke. The size of this piece is 11⅛ x 15 in., so a smaller-sized painting. It’s located and displayed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The painting is a bright piece with bright blue skies, yellowish weeds, and grassy hills behind. The painting also does some visual storytelling of its own, the house has a little bit of blackening on the side and the tall yellowish weeds make the place feel abandoned. There is no light emanating from inside the house and with the vast field, it looks like there is nothing in miles. The art piece might look simple at first glance, but once you look more closely it slowly tells a story without words. With so much space in the art piece, it feels empty and dead like no one is living there.

Analysis

The House stands out the most, it is white, the biggest object on the screen, and it’s in the middle of the screen. Since the artwork is more realistic than it is abstract, having a house in the middle of a field, has nothing to off about it. Since the whole painting is in the same type of art, paint, it looks very well together and nothing looks out of place. The symmetry is very well made and that it feels like neither side of the screen is being more cared than the other, maybe the left hill might have a little bit more detail, but nothing to much. I also see that there is alot of detail on the house making a story out of it for the viewer to ponder about. The colors are bright, but also dull at the same time, making the art more interesting to look at.

Interpretation

Like I said in the description part, this has alot of visual storytelling, and there can be a ton of meaning behind this art piece. Say for beginners the house look abandoned in the middle of a field and that it looks like there is some kind of black gunk on the side and looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in years. Also on the sides of the house where the yellow weeds are, looked like nothing has been done around the house in years. This painting shows the, as the title says, mapping light. The artist was well known for making really good lighting in his artwork, and this shows in this painting, look how the sun is hitting the house and land. This picture looks very realistic since how well its painted.

Evaluation

I think the art piece is very well made and it shows the beauty in simplicity and visual storytelling; saying that it’s not the best piece of art ever made, after awhile it does kinda look boring since there isn’t much to look at and I would change that fact by adding something more interesting in the background so you don’t take away the main focus, which is the house in the middle. Even though with those downsides, I do enjoy this art, it’s very well made and looks stunning with how well Mr. Hopper’s lighting techniques.

I learned how bad photoshop animation is and how much I hate it. My steps in this project are a little weird, I had to rush since I missed a week, but I slowly caught up and finished the project on time.

The Animation reflects on my interests and hobbies I do in my free time. The Images I chose were what I am interested in and what I enjoy doing. The images slowly faded in showing my interests growing in them.

I learned how to mask and make images look better, and I also learned how to tell if a photo was taken poorly.

In my logo, I wanted to express myself by adding a few key details such as a moon and orca. The moon is to symbolizes night and how I enjoy it more than a day. I also made it yellow to represent intelligence and joy in it. I use an orca to symbolize protection and harmony.

I originally made the orca jumping into the logo, but later I thought about putting it above the orca like a crown or halo. I think I would move the moon to look like it’s going down over the sea. I think the most successful part is the water and orca. I think the Orca is one of the best parts of the logo.
