Expressive Line Drawings
The lines I used in my first drawing are jagged, thick, and are used for cross-hatching. The lines zigzag and have few curves. The lines in my first drawing represent ‘anger’. I wanted the lines to express the strong, jagged, aggressive feeling people get when they’re angry. I thought that an angry person often wants to partake in violence, which is what I was trying to communicate with the zigzag lines. The lines are thick because anger is a very strong emotion that can often lead to people losing control. I chose to use the lines to do cross-hatching because it seems to express anger and jaggedness since the lines penetrate the other lines. I think the first image is the most successful because the lines represent anger very well in my opinion, while the second image doesn’t represent sleepiness nearly as well.
The lines I used in my second drawing are thin, soft, and are used for hatching. The lines are very curvy, and have no edges. The lines in my second drawing represent ‘sleepiness’. I wanted the lines to express the tired, lazy, out of it feeling people get when they’re sleepy. I thought that a sleepy person often wants to just get by, which is why my lines are so smooth and thin, since a tired person would just make the lines real quick to try and be done with it. I chose to use the lines to do hatching because it seems to express tiredness since people who are tired don’t want to touch.
The purpose of this project was to learn how to show texture, and how to do printmaking. The texture I showed was bumpy. I showed this texture by having some different colored areas that look bumpy. I chose this texture because I wanted to do an armadillo. The printmaking process was to carve away from the block we had, put paint on it, and put the paint on the painting in order, keeping everything lined up. This is a reduction print because the area being printed is decreasing. This is a relief print because I removed from the block that I was putting the paint on. Registration in printing means layering colors to make a multicolored design. I learned how to make a print during this project, and how to work quickly so that the paint wouldn’t dry. The challenging part about this project was keeping the colors lined up. I think I succeeded at the carving.
This project was creating space in a watercolor painting. The steps that I did to create this project were sketching out what I was going to paint in a way that showed space through placement, size, and overlapping, then mixing the paint to get the perfect color and painting it in with the watercolor.
Colors got duller the farther away the object was to show space using color. Things were less detailed the farther away they were to show space, like how the city has almost no detail since it is so far away. I placed things higher on the page that were farther away to show space using placement. Things that were farther away were made to look smaller to show space using size. I overlapped some of the pyramids to show space using overlapping.
Some changes that I made to my design on the realistic watercolor as I worked included darkening the colors of the sky and the city, and adding lines to the pyramids. Some changes I made between the realistic watercolor and the abstract watercolor was getting rid of the lines, making the pyramids taller, and making the pyramids more orange. My photoshop design differs from my watercolor painting by looking cleaner, since it uses perfectly straight lines and more consistent colors.
There are 5 people represented in my sculpture. The 5 people represented are my dad, me, my two brothers, and my sister. Some ways we are similar to and different from each other are that me and Dyllan (the middle brother) derive our personalities primarily from our dad, while our other siblings derive more from mom. My personality is more laid back. Dyllan’s personality is also more laid back. Elijah's (my younger brother) personality is more aggressive and annoying. Finley’s(my sister’s) personality is loud and kind of annoying. My dad’s personality is very laid back for the most part. Elijah doesn’t get along with anybody, Finley is annoying to most people, but me and dad don’t get too annoyed with her, and the rest of us get along fine.
The way that my dad is represented in the sculpture is as the purple base shape, because he is the base of the family. The way that I am represented is as the middle red shape holding everyone together, and I am red because my personality is derived closely from my dad’s. The way that dyllan is represented is as the blue shape on top the top left, he is blue because he is derived closely from dad personality wise as well, he is also couch shaped because he quite enjoys time to relax. Finley is the pink shape on the top right with the hole in the middle, she is pink because she is somewhat similar to dad, and she has a hole in the center of her shape because she is always talking. The final yellow shape is Elijah, he is yellow because he isn’t very similar to the rest of use, and his shape looks rigid and shoved in there because of how annoying he is.
The craftsmanship of the sculpture wasn’t the best part of it, since I was kind of rushed towards the end to get it done. The expressive parts of the sculpture were the best part of it in my opinion because every part of it has quite a bit of meaning. The part of the assignment that I struggled with the most was the paper macheing because there were a lot of holes that I had to line with the newspaper, which was hard to do. The part of the project that was the easiest for me was the cutting out and taping of the shapes, because it was quite simple to accomplish. I could make the paint job better if I had more time. This artwork is about the quality that I was expecting for it relative to my other artworks, it was better than most of them, but not my absolute best work.
My idea for my project was to create a sculpture of me with some things on it to show my personality and some things about me. One of the things on it that are representative of a part of me is the cracked skull with brain showing, which is meant to show my brain being large since I'm a smarty pants, and to show how I've struggled with mental health. Another one of the things that are representative of a part of me are the math equations on the front of my shirt, which show that I am a huge nerd, and if you plug in the equations into a graphing calculator it shows the anarchy symbol which shows that I am a punk. The final thing that is representative of me is the bisexual flag on the back of my shirt, which shows that I am a bisexual but that I also don’t really like people knowing due to the undue prejudice people might hold because of it.
I started in my process to model this sculpture by figuring out my idea for my artwork and creating sketches of my ideas. The next step was to start making a basic armature out of cardboard and foam core that I cut out. Then I covered the armature in aluminum foil so that the sculpt-a-mold would hold. The next step was to start adding the first layer of sculpt-a-mold, which I then used to add on all of the features with more sculpt-a-mold. The final step was to paint the sculpture and add all of the special touches.
One thing I learned during this project was how to use sculpt-a-mold. Another thing I learned was to use aluminum foil to be able to attach the sculpt-a-mold. Something easy about this project was the painting. Something hard about this project was creating the armature and adding the sculpt-a-mold. The skill of sculpting might help in the future by making me more able to make 3d models for engineering.
My idea for this project was to create a mushroom covered in smaller mushrooms. My inspiration was mushrooms. We started with a big block of plaster that we carved away to get the shape. Then we painted the carving that we had made to get the final product. Through this project I have learned how to carve away at plaster, and this project helped develop my planning skills. The easy part about this project was the painting. The difficult part was getting the carving right so that you would have the right shape. The planning skills that I learned from this will help me very much in the future.
