Our movement seeks to emphasize that the students' voices must be considered when those in power are making decisions. The State has issued a mandate that will drastically affect school schedules across all of California, yet not a single student's input was taken before this decision was made. Both the State and District need to understand that many of us, the students, have families to support, mental health to tend to, siblings to take care of, and other responsibilities; it is NOT okay that we are having drastic changes forced upon us with little to no warning. The state had made it known since September that there are new requirements, so why are we only being told in November, less than a month before the end of the semester?

Join us this Monday as we assemble at the SMJUHSD office, in protest of these injustices! It is grossly unfair that the State thought it acceptable to impose these changes without first communicating with its stakeholders.

OUR DEMANDS

1. We demand to know why the district’s response was so inefficient and badly-timed.

2. We demand transparency and a clear line of communication between the district and its students.

3. We demand that the district assess the community’s needs and consider how it can most effectively meet the needs of the most vulnerable students.

4. We demand that any changes that happen do so without disrupting students’ livelihoods

5. We demand to have a working relationship with the school district so that any changes that are made, are done so in an effective and organized manner.

6. We demand a school schedule that does not take away from the precious time students have to fulfill their responsibilities like taking care of siblings and working.

7. We demand that the school district’s actions reflect their concerns about students’ mental health.

8. We demand greater flexibility in the district’s approach to meeting the state’s attendance requirements.
