Examples of Servant Leaders

Princess Diana

Princess Diana has the following skills that makes her a servant leader due to her commitment to charity work and campaigns (i.e. HIV/AIDS, leprosy, and animal protections). She didn't shy away from the backlash she received from others, but rather stuck to her personal moral and ethical values. This cause her to earned moniker 'the People's Princess'.

Nelson Mandela

This quote from Nelson Mandela sums up why he is one of the world's best servant leader and President of South Africa:
“It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.” — Nelson Mandela

Alexandria

Ocasio-Cortez

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has the following skills that make her a servant leader due to her want to challenge the status quo, her agenda is for the people, grassroot activism and policy making. She has created empowerment to those within her community of New York's 14th Congressional District. However, she was able to achieve this through her time as the 'youngest congressperson to be elected into Congress'.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has the following skills that make him a servant leader because during his time as the current President of Ukraine, he has spoken with using inclusive terminology (i.e. we, us, all, everyone), After Russia's invasion on Ukraine, he stood his ground along with his people and refused to leave his country and people to 'save' himself and was quoted as saying, "I don't need a ride, I need ammunition." He shares the spotlight with cabinet ministers, diplomats, and other allies. Against-all-the-odds, his leadership prove to be the most formidable weapon against tyranny and oppression. He now living up and keep his promise as the 'Servant of the People.'

Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi has the following skills that makes him a servant leader...Gandhi repeatedly indicates to lead authentically; you either do it or you don’t. A servant leader is motivated, not by a desire to control others, but by a desire to help them realize their dignity and power. Gandhi preached non-violence and dedicated his career to the achievement of a better life for the downtrodden.

Judith Heumann

Judith Heumann has the following skills that make her a servant leader due to being able to do groundbreaking work with Congress throughout the decades in American History to get the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act for many future Americans that will be highly going to need this to be successful within life. Throughout her time as a grassroot organizator, she was able to have the longest sit-in in American History for Section 504 to pass for 28 whole days. She was able to make change within inaccessible world around her and other to make that change. With these many success, she became know as the 'Mother of Disabilities Rights' throughout the United States, but internationally as well to make changes.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life shows the extraordinary power of servant leadership to radically transform a nation. He is one who offers an inclusive vision; listens carefully to others; persuades through reason; and heals divisions while building community.

Angela Merkel

Angela Merkel has the following skills that make her a servant leader due to the outstanding time as the Chancellor of Germany and the first Eastern German to lead the reunified Germany. However, she was able to reserved and steadfast in crisis as exemplified in taking in Syrian refugees in 2016 to standing up to Donald Trump earned her trust of not only Germany, but for Europe as a whole. She had an 82 percent approval of the Chancellor's job during the pandemic crisis. This caused her to being dubbed the 'World's Most Powerful Woman' and 'Informal Leader of the European Union'.

How to be a Servant Leader?

Listen first, speak last. Servant Leaders want to hear the opinions of their team.
Set up weekly/monthly/yearly check-ins and one-on-ones with staff. Take a vested interest in your team's well-being and goals.
Put employees and organization first. Institute free programs, incentives, on-site daycare, free tuition, etc.
Help those struggling in the workplace to thrive. This helps employees feel valued and respected.
Take responsibility for the team. They fall on the sword for their employees.
Create an environment of trust, understanding, and empathy. Staff will be less likely to be deceiving, less call-outs and sick days used.
It’s a Tribe/Family-Installing a culture of community. The people you hear describe their place of work as family oriented are happier and more content with their work and social lives.
Servant Leaders put aside their own needs and put the needs of someone on their team first. If a staff member received a called at work about a family emergency a Servant Leader may offer to drive or ask someone else to take them to the hospital.
