The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. The book is selected at the end of January.
The Bill Martin, Jr. Picture Book Award is used to promote quality literature in young children across Kansas, commend outstanding authors/illustrators of children's books, and encourage involvement in promoting quality picture books. Since 2018, this award has been presented by Emporia State University.

The William Allen White Award was established to encourage the children of Kansas to read and enjoy good books. The winner is selected annually in April by the votes of Kansas school children who read the books chosen by the selection committee.
The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are given annually in January to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values.
The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American Literature for children. The book is selected at the end of January.
