Build a Band

Process

For this project, we had to learn about waves, frequency, and other concepts. We had several assignments that had us analyze the details of waves and how they work on the electromagnetic spectrum. We also did experiments with things like springs to understand waves better. For the second half of the project me, Zach, Madison, and Maddie worked together to make instruments using our knowledge of waves. We had to make one string instrument, one chime instrument, and one wind instrument. We ended up choosing to make a guitar/ukulele, a xylophone, and a trumpet.

Content

Frequency

Frequency is the number of vibrations per second in a wave. Hertz is the unit for frequency.

Wavelength

Wavelength is the distance from crest to crest or compression to compression. Wavelength is measured in meters.

Wave Speed

Wave speed is how fast the wave travels or the velocity. Wave speed is measured in meters per second.

Amplitude

Amplitude is the distance from the midpoint to the maximum. Amplitude is measured in meters.

Transverse Wave

Transverse waves are waves that have their particle movement perpendicular to the energy transfer direction.

Longitudinal Wave

Longitudinal waves are waves that have their particle movement the same as the energy transfer.

Electromagnetic Spectrum

The electromagnetic spectrum is the range of frequencies that can be emitted by electromagnetic radiation.

Reflection

I think that this project went quite well. It was up to standard and everything got done on time. I definitely did better work than I did on the last project. I excelled in critical thinking and collaboration. I was able to think about how to go about progressing towards the end goal and solve problems when they arose. I worked well with my team too to make sure everything was smooth. I think that I could work on my communication because I didn't really ask questions when I needed to. Other than that I think I did good with this project.
