Macromolecules Testing Lab

Description

In this lab/project we were asked to test different macromolecules in different types of food by using 4 solutions.

We tested the food to test if it had any macromolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, starch and proteins by using different indicators.

At the end of this lab I learned that macromolecules are made up of even smaller parts called monomers. These monomers can combine to create polymers which are the macromolecules.

To test for each of these substances we had to follow 4 different procedures. To test for carbohydrates (glucose), we used an indicator called Benedict's solution. We mixed 2 ml of the solution with 2 ml of our food. Then we put it in boiling heat for 2 mins. If the solution turned green, orange, or red then the food had carbohydrates. If it stayed the same color as in the beginning (blue) then there is no glucose present. To test for Proteins we took 2 ml of our food and mixed with 0.75 ml of biuret for 30 seconds. If the solution stays blue then there is no protein present. If the solution turned purple then that would mean that protein present. To test for lipids (fats) we take a drop of the food what was mixed with water and put it on a paper towel. We let it sit and dry for 10 minutes and then record the percent of translucence. If the percent was less than 20 percent there are little to no lipids present. if it is above 20 up to 80 percent there are little to high amounts of lipids present. Lastly to test for starch we mixed 2 ml of our food solution with 0.1 ml of iodine. We mixed the solution without adding heat and recorded the color. If the solution turned black then there is starch present. If the solution stayed brown then there is no starch present.

During this lab we correctly mixed and recorded our sindings. There were no errors made. One thing that I learned about my self is that I am looking forward to taking chemistry next year. From this lab I did not gain any skills. Something that i could have done differently was doing a better job at cleaning up. Another thing that I could have done differently is making sure that everyone is following the right lab procedures.
