"He came for his kids. He knew there was nothing in Ireland - he wanted more for his children than poverty and farming like he had to face. So He saved up every penny to bring his family to the land of opportunity" (Kevin Keane).
Michael saved all his money to bring himself, his wife Mary, and his brother to the United States. Scared, they left their family and boarded a ship in western Ireland and set out for Boston. Michael had rented a small rundown flat in Brookline for himself and his wife, Kathleen. Kevin reported that when Kathleen saw the flat she "Fell to the ground in tears." Kevin explained, "I mean, she was terrified. She left her family, they had little money, and they ran on an optimistic attitude that it would all work out" (Kevin Keane).
Michael took up a job as the grounds keeper at The Gold Club (now known as the Brookline Golf Club). Michael worked long, hard hours on the course to provide for his growing family. During this time, Michael and Mary welcomed their first four children, Mary, Martin, Kathleen and Peggy into the world.
