Life In Peru

What Home was Like for Sylvia

In Peru, Sylvia lived in a fairly large house near Lima. Her mother worked as an English teacher, and her father was employed as an electrical engineer.

"Life was pretty good for us. We lived middle, upper-middle class, in a nice neighborhood, and my father worked as an engineer, my mom worked as a teacher. We had lots of friends, and belonged to the Jewish community- there was a major center there"

In Peru, Sylvia's grandmother lived down the street, and Sylvia and her older brother would frequently visit her after school and watch Telenovelas.

Sylvia's family had hired help, which was common at the time. Their housekeeper acted similar to a nanny, watching and caring for Sylvia and her brother.

Sylvia also remembers eating lunch with her friends and father every day.

In Peru, most people had long lunch breaks, which were generally consistent between everyone. During these breaks, Sylvia's father would pick Sylvia and her friends up from school and make them lunch.

Overall, life was quite similar to the middle/ middle-upper class in America.
