Kesavan first got a job in Kansas City, where Dhanam and Setti lived. Dhanam and Setti had two daughters. Living with family made the process of assimilation easier because they provided some familiarity in an entirely new environment.
The family moved to Omaha, Nebraska due to Kesavan's job change.
"We were one of only three Indian families in town. They were all engineers that worked with Kesavan." (Pushpam Kesavan)
Because his degree was from India, Kesavan was working a job as a draftsman, which he was overqualified for.
