Samuel Kalis was born in Lviv, Ukraine in 1908, where he endured the hardships of post World War I economic downturn as well as anti-Semitism. To escape these difficulties, he and his family immigrated to Boston, MA in 1920, where he earned an education and made a successful living. His story reflects the experiences of many other Jews who had to flee from poverty and European persecution.
