Fashionista of the Month: Matt Shusterman

Matt Shusterman is a stylish, music-loving junior, and this December’s fashionista of the month!

In three words, how would you describe your style? 

Open to opinion. 

Interesting. What is the ideal/perfect shoe? 

I mostly like comfortable shoes that are pretty loud. I definitely like to play with the silhouette of normal shoes and materials. I like suede shoes a lot but a lot of shoes Balenciaga makes I really like. They play with the silhouettes and normal look of shoes and put a spin on it.

Speaking of shoes… Crocs (as fashion shoes, not comfort shoes): yes or no? 

I like them more as a comfort shoe but I think anyone could pull them off with the right pants and tops.

I agree, I think they can be styled, but I don’t necessarily agree with them in high fashion. Do you prefer more neutral or brighter color palettes? Baggier or fitted silhouettes? Comfortable or rigid fabrics?

I definitely like a more neutral one just because it can work in any situation. I prefer baggier clothes just because they’re more comfy and usually just make me feel more comfortable in my environment. With the fabric, I don’t really mind much. If it’s rigid I’ll usually wear an undershirt or just deal with it. If it looks good I’ll usually just deal with it.

What do you look for in a graphic tee?

Honestly, I usually just look for a simplistic design that goes with mostly everything. I also like designs that aren’t associated with much but have high quality blanks. I mostly like blank tees just because you can’t always rock graphic tees with everything.

How do jewelry and accessories play a role in an outfit for you?

I think they add to [outfits] but I don’t really consider what I put on like that. I just wear what I like.

Who is your favorite fashionista/fashion inspo?

Wisdm on Instagram has some nice fits. I really like Dominic Fike’s style as well as Playboi Carti at times.

Do you thrift? Why or why not? Where else do you shop?

Yes, I do thrift. I do it just to find things that are more out there and are unique. I also shop on Depop, but mostly I just buy stuff in person.

I’ve been meaning to buy more from Depop. What was your favorite clothing item as a kid?

As a kid I just loved my sweatshirts and shoes. I used to love Adidas Ultraboosts. I would always rock those.

Those are really cool. What would you choose as your last meal?

I had this crab Eggs Benedict in Georgia. It was super good.

That sounds amazing. Who were your top artists on Spotify wrapped? Did your wrapped surprise you?

Mine were Drake, Travis Scott, and Mac Miller. It doesn’t really surprise me because I listen to them in the gym a lot. At home and in school I like to listen to Mac Miller, Mac Demarco, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, and Slowdive.

What TV shows and movies are you obsessed with right now?

I love the movie Mysterious Skin. It is an amazing story about trauma and losing innocence. I also love the show True Detective, the first season at least. It is a super interesting story that I have watched multiple times and is just amazing.
