Fashionista of the Month: Grey Whalen ('25)

By Amelie Zosa

Grey Whalen is the coolest and kindest person I’ve had the pleasure of calling my friend. An added bonus? They’re super fashionable too! Grey is a sophomore here at NHS and I had the pleasure of interviewing them.

What are your favorite underrated stores?

Not a brand, but over the summer I volunteered at a thrift store in New Hampshire called Listen -- if you’re ever there, the selection is big but not overwhelming, and most clothes are $10 and under.

As an artist, what do you look for in clothing in terms of texture, color, pattern, and more?

Aesthetic wise, I’ve always prioritized looking for the right shapes when drawing or wearing an outfit. Defined seams also help give a figure an “outlined” look, which make it easier for the eye to make out the desired depth and volume of the human form.

Wow, that is very insightful! Corduroy: yes or no?

YUM, YES!

Who is your favorite fashionista/fashion inspo?

Amelie Zosa. Just kidding, Madeleine White and Wilbur Soot.

Funny. Choose your fighter:

Little shirt, big pants!

I agree! Can shoes make or break an outfit?

Just go barefoot.

I mean, fair enough. What does a go-to Grey Whalen everyday outfit look like?

I love, love, love wide-legged and high-waisted pants (like my ripped, patchy jeans) with a crop top, preferably over a cropped black mock neck in winter.

What kinds of clothes make you feel the most confident?

I feel best when I’m wearing wide-legged pants; I used to wear leggings like every day before 9th grade and it made me feel awkwardly tall. Cropped clothes always make me feel more comfy so I can create contrast between the baggy pants and a top.

I am with you. Wide legged pants are all I wear. What is your favorite kind of accessory and why?

Earrings! Big, dangling earrings will always be my favorite way to be creative with outfits. Especially when paired with something shiny on the neck, earrings give every fit more interest, especially from a design standpoint.

What is your favorite vegetable?

Kale. Shut up.

What is your favorite way to spend a self-care day?

Bake, watch a dumb show, and play Stardew Valley with my pals.

Sounds fun! Who is your top listened-to artist?

Taylor Swift is the honest answer but the cute indie answer would be Lizzy McAlpine or the Front Bottoms.

I love that! Taylor is my top artist too. Thank you, Grey, for a wonderful and entertaining interview!

Stay tuned for more fashionistas this school year, and DM @hilltoppernhs on Instagram to nominate yourself or a friend as a future fashionista!
