Jayie Chou is one of NHS’s most fashionable, eye-catching seniors. Her incredible artistic ability makes her style so unique and interesting. I was so pleased to have gotten the chance to interview her!
Why are you so interested in fashion? What do you love about it?
I think fashion is a fun form of self expression and it’s my outlet for creative energy, plus I think it’s been a big part in the development of my self confidence.
What types of clothing do you feel the most confident in? What are your favorite color palettes to dress in? Favorite silhouettes? Accessories?
I really enjoy experimenting, so I think that as long as my outfit is cohesive and exciting, I feel pretty confident in whatever I wear. I like having a little bit of everything, I have hopped on the layering trend which has been fun. I always wear correlating earrings, necklaces, and makeup.
What are your favorite places to shop? Do you prefer in person or online shopping?
THRIFTING! I am trying so hard to not shop retail anymore, especially because I have such a huge abundance of clothes, there’s nothing I really NEED. But if I do shop online I look on Depop and Curtsy.
The corset craze: yes or no? What are your thoughts?
I like corsets and I am a sucker for micro trends, no denying that, but I’d like to think that even if it was not a micro trend, I’d still enjoy the style.
Would you rather only be able to wear cropped/tight fitting clothes for the rest of your life or oversized clothes for the rest of your life?
Cropped and tight, I think I do feel more confident in that style and there’s more garments to create that look.
How has your style evolved since you were younger?
My style is so inconsistent and always evolving. I go through many “phases.” In middle school I went through a combat boot phase and [an] embroidery roses phase, then sophomore year I had a strict sweatpants, tank top, and zip up phase. My style junior year was like streetwear, I guess you could say. Then that summer before senior year, I finally felt comfortable wearing dresses, and now everything is crazy and I couldn’t give a word to describe my style.
What is your outfit picking process like?
I pick out my outfits for school the night before, or at least I try to plan it in my head. I am also always up-cycling clothes, and making jewelry or other garments that I really enjoy incorporating and then telling people I made it!
Is there any specific way your closet is arranged?
I am a mess – I do not have enough hanging or drawer space for all my clothes, but a few months ago Liz Nahigian organized my closet and I have managed to keep the system she created.
What is your music taste like? What are your favorite artists/songs?
I honestly don’t know what to describe my music taste as. I like Maude Latour, Remi Wolf, King Mala, and Cami Petyn.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to shop, hangout with my friends, and eat food.
Thank you so much!
