Life Before the US

Mikhail Fairneny was born in Damascus, Syria on August 15, 1872. He studied the basics of Arabic, math, and bookkeeping at the Greek Orthodox School in Damascus. He left school in 1886 to work and support his family because his father had a lower income job. He and his family began to travel after his father passed away at 18. He traveled to Beirut, Lebanon to work at his Uncles shop where he was a bookkeeper, author, poet, and playwright.

Time in Beirut, Lebanon

Fairneny traveled with his mother, brother, and sister to Beirut, to work as a book keeper at his uncle, Jebran Habib Fairneny's store. There he noticed how the people of Beirut studied poetry and writing. Fairneny was upset that he was not at the same level as these scholars and could not join them. He did not give up. He decided to begin studying himself. He decided to read alone night and day. He claimed, "The books became my best friends during the night". He continued until he got a good foundation of the Arabic language and then he began to write poems. He recited one poem that was praising Ibrahim Horany and the other writers, speakers, and poets were doing the same thing. His poem was written about in the newspaper called "Lissan El Hal". Having his words seen in the journal, he was pushed to focus more on his writing. He wrote his first book after this called "Al Bayan Li Ackd E Jaman" about the basic needs for Arabic. He did not only write books and poems. He wrote several plays. In 1893, He left Beirut and traveled to Egypt, where he worked hard in a commercial store. In his free time he wrote plays and gave them to the "Skandar Farrah Group", whose leader was the famous Sheikh Falama Hijazy.
