Maureen met her husband in Dorchester where they used to attend dances together. Her husband was also an immigrant from Ireland and he had come to America in 1958 and then later became a citizen in 1962. The couple married in 1965, when Maureen was 20 years old. They had their first child in 1956 and she went on to have seven children in total. She is also currently a grandmother to thirteen grandchildren. Most of Maureen's immediate family still live in Ireland, however she and her siblings still visit one another.

One of Maureen's son's Michael was born with cerebral palsy, autism and a seizure disorder. He was limited to a wheelchair and required lots of care. A large part of Maureen's life was caring for Michael. Unfortunately, her husband passed away from cancer when Maureen was 53, so she had to take on the role of caring for Michael on her own. Sadly, Michael passed away 4 years ago at 42 years old. Maureen's daughter, Maggie Carroll claims that,

"It is my mother’s strong Catholic Faith that had carried her through her life. She is truly a saint."
