Kian sold all of his land that he owned after seeing his sister move to America with her husband and hearing promising things. Compared to other Koreans, Kian was one of the earliest to leave Korea for the US. After selling all his land, he headed off to the US to search for a house, and decided to buy one in Clinton, Massachusetts.
During this time, Yuchun stayed back with the five kids and ran the family store. A year later she left on a plane with the kids and flew to America.
After immigrating to Clinton, MA in the 1970's, Kian changed his name to Edward Kian Kim. Yuchun however didn't change her name, and also refused to learn English.
Clinton at the time was a factory town, Edward and Yuchun worked at a plastic molding factory. While Yuchun worked at home and in the factory, Edward climbed up the plastic factory ranks. He got promoted to working in the machine room and was given a portion of company shares. After a bit, he sold his stock in order to buy his own laundromat in Athol, MA.
