How do we propose to solve this problem locally?
To help solve this problem, we propose that the cafeteria of Mountain View should have reusable trays and utensils. Either that or kids should have their own little kit of reusable forks and spoons to bring for lunch. Obviously we would have to spend money in order to buy the trays and utensils needed for the whole school. We can purchase the trays from Amazon or buy plates from the dollar store. We can buy the utensils from stores like Walmart, Kohls, or even the Dollar store. We can even sell some of the kits at the bullseye if kids want to have their own kits.
By doing this, we will reduce the trash that is getting thrown away here at Mountain View because most of the trash that is getting disposed are the forks and spoons, trays, juice boxes, and milk cartons. Being able to reduce even just the trays and utensils being thrown away would make a difference. It would also reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. Also, our school will save a lot of money by using reusable utensils and trays.
To switch Mountain Views cafeteria to reusable dishes and utensils we would first research price comparisons on different materials, quantities, and brands. Using funds given to us we would purchase the designated number of dishes needed. And we would speak with the cafeteria about letting more students work in the cafeteria during lunches to wash dishes.
In order for kids to know about this happening we want to make a little organization at our school to go around and talk about our proposal. That way, if kids already have their own utensils to bring they can or if they would be willing to donate any reusable utensils they can or if they want to provide their own kit.
