At school, we refer to students who speak another language at home as "multilinguals" or "MLs." Their families may speak both English and a native language (or more than one!) at home, or maybe just their native language. These students are screened for English proficiency and can then qualify to get extra support at school from an ESL teacher.
Our job is to support students who speak and/or understand multiple languages. We believe bilingualism (or multilingualism!) is a huge asset to these students, but sometimes they need a little support to do their very best in school...and that's where I come in.
At PPE, we do both push-in (staying in the classroom and co-teaching with the classroom teacher), and pull-out (taking small groups out of the room so we can customize instruction). Some of these groups get "ELD," or "English Language Development" which is a curriculum written specifically to help students develop language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English.
We work with grades kindergarten-5th grade. We love that we can work with students for multiple years and get to see them grow as learners and as people.
My name is Mrs. Stachow (Stake-oh). I have been teaching ESL at Pleasant Prairie since 2010. I graduated from UW-Whitewater with a degree in regular education and ESL.
I live in Kenosha with my husband (Mr. Stachow - he teaches 4th grade here at PPE), and our two kids. We also have a playful cat named Callie. I love to garden, spend time with my family, go to the library, and visit new places!
Hello! I have been teaching in KUSD for many years; first as a special education teacher and now as an ESL teacher. I grew up in Michigan, then lived in Ohio for 5 years. We have called Kenosha home for over 20 years. My husband and I have 2 grown children. Our daughter lives and works in Madison, WI, and our son lives and works in Minneapolis, MN.
