Tools for Organizing and Studying

There exist a variety of assistive technology tools to consider in helping a student become independent in his/her ability to complete classroom work and assignments. There are a number of areas in which assistive technology can aid a student's ability to be both independent and successful in the classroom which may include notetaking, mind mapping and/or brainstorming, organization, time management, task completion, research tools, and stress management.

Assistive Technology tools ranging from low-tech to high-tech may be used to support student independence and task completion using a variety of tools in the areas of notetaking, mind mapping/brainstorming, organization, time management, task completion, research, and/or stress management may include:

  • Highlighter and/or highlighter tape

Voice Typing: Dictate words into text using a laptop, desktop, or Chromebook's built-in Chrome browser

Google Keep Google Keep is a note-taking service included as part of the free, web-based Google Docs Editors suite offered by Google. Capture ideas with your voice, add images to notes, check tasks off your to-do list, and much more.

Quizlet: Search millions of study sets or create your own. Improve your grades by studying with flashcards, games and more.

Evernote: Capture, organize, and share notes from anywhere.

Guided Mind: Relax and get guided through meditations on a variety of topics dealing with the stresses and challenges of day-to-day life.

MindMeister is an online mind mapping tool that lets you capture, develop and share ideas visually.

Moodflow: Meditate, Reflect, and Motivate with Moodflow. Replace the boring new tab page with beautiful scenery, while getting to know what makes you happy.

myHomework is a digital student planner that lets you easily track your classes, homework, tests and projects so you never forget an assignment again!

OneNote is a digital notebook. Whether you’re at home, in school, or in the office, use OneNote to take notes wherever you go. And OneNote automatically saves and synchronizes your notes so you can focus on your thoughts and ideas.

Popplet is a tool that allows users to visualize ideas. Teachers and students can create graphic organizers, timelines, and many other forms of visual organization and as a collaborative brainstorming tool.

Cold Turkey is a free productivity program that you can use to temporarily block distractions so that you can get your work done!

Relax Melodies: Create your own soundscapes with sleep sounds and melodies.

RemindMe allows you to setup reminders while browsing and sync them between computers.

Scrible is a browser plug-in for saving, commenting on, and annotating articles found on the web. Students use Scrible to take notes on online articles right from the webpage, create citations, save bibliographies, and integrate their work to Google Docs.

Tile is an application and hardware device package, for Android (Google) and iOS (Apple) platforms, that allows users to locate lost items via Bluetooth technology.
