Algebra 1 Expectations
This course earns a high school credit. It is a required math credit that will stay on a student's transcript.
To be eligible for the A+ Program, an EOC (End of Course) score of proficient or advanced is REQUIRED.
This is an advanced course and students must maintain a B- or higher in the class (or will be moved into Math 8). This will be evaluated quarterly.
Students should expect nightly homework assignments. Showing work is always a requirement.
Attendance is important - ex. try to make Dr/DDS appointments around this class.
The pace of this class is very fast. It can be very difficult to get caught up, if you get behind.
Supplies (expected in class daily)
1. Binder with Paper (tabs are helpful for organization, but not required)
2. Plenty of pencils
3. Calculator (TI 30X II S or TI 34 II or equivalent)
4. Whiteboard Markers
5. Ruler
Class Rules
Be on-time, on-task, and prepared to learn EVERYDAY.
Keep all personal electronics put away.
Be responsible for your own learning.
Respect: the teacher, the classroom, other students.
Classroom Grading
Math classes are graded on a weighted scale:
50% Tests
30% Homework/Classwork Assignments
20% Quiz/Notes/Participation
Homework/Classwork: An assignment will be given with each lesson. Each will be around 20 problems or less, and students will be given class time to work on each assignment. Most assignments will be online and graded. The program allows for students to keep trying until they have gotten the question correct.
Quizzes: Short quizzes to assess students understanding of the material will be given throughout the chapter. Most quizzes are 10 points. Showing work will be expected and graded. Teacher discretion on points awarded. Retakes will be available for quizzes. Students can use notes on quizzes. They must use their own notes. No sharing or using teacher notes allowed on quizzes. Quizzes must be completed in class.
Tests: At the end of each topic (chapter), a test will be given. Tests are in Delta Math (online program) and ONE attempt will be given. Showing work will be expected and graded. Generally, there will be no notes available for tests. Tests are designed to be completed in one class period. No extra time is given. Preparation for tests is incredibly important.
To prepare students for the tests, I will provide a required practice test in Delta Math.
If a student wants to take a second attempt on their test:
Practice Test must be 100%.
Schedule a time during Bulldog Zone (after school) or Seminar (Bulldog Time) the week following the test.
Students can earn 1/2 point back for each question they missed.
Delta Math: Delta Math is an online program. Occasionally students will be asked to work in this program to review material and practice important skills. These assignments may be given a window of time to be completed, and the expectations and due dates will always be posted on the board and in Google Classroom.
End-Of-Course (EOC) Exam: At the end of the school year, students will take the EOC, a state-wide test. Students MUST have an A or B in Algebra 1 to take the EOC. Students may receive a grade incentive for scoring proficient or advanced on the EOC.
Notes: We take notes during class. Completed notes are on Google Classroom. Our new textbook resources have helpful video resources that students should take advantage of if they are absent or are struggling on a topic.
Participation: Students earn points for actively contributing ideas, collaborating respectfully, coming prepared, and clearly explaining their reasoning, with teacher observations, peer feedback, and self-reflection helping track progress.
Late Work Policy
All assignments must be turned in by the Topic (Chapter) Test. No assignments can be turned in after that date.
Absences
While I believe it is so important that students are at school every day, I understand that sometimes absences cannot be avoided. Assignments will be posted for students on google classroom. If a student misses a test, they will be expected to make that up upon their return. Test dates are posted at the beginning of each chapter and clearly communicated with students.
Parents may access google classroom using your child's log in information.
Students: It is your responsibility to get absent work in a timely manner.
