My Project: The Global Cookbook
For my service learning project, I am creating a research-based, beginner-friendly blog that incorporates the ideas of sustainable consumption, and affordable personal health through food-related habits. With the climate crisis, the health issues in America, and the over-saturation of ultra-processed foods in our food industry in mind, I aim to tackle these issues through what food we eat, where it is sourced from, and even how we dispose of it.
Why did I choose this project?
I chose this project because I feel passionate about addressing the goals of responsible consumption and better health, and I want to spotlight how food has an immense effect on these aspects of our lives. Food consumption is one of those universal needs that unites humankind, and our industries today are riddled with issues and room for growth. I had a uniquely creative vision for this blog, and I'm excited to see it come to fruition.
Project Goals & Progress
The creation of The Global Cookbook Blog is currently published! Here are its goals:
Create a blog that researches and addresses the many flaws in the American food processing and agriculture industries to bring more awareness to consumers.
Provide solutions for personal health and environmental consciousness that incorporate the goals of cultural awareness, budget-friendly cooking and sustainable food practices.
Including a second section with sustainable food practices beyond cooking, which includes limiting food wastage, composting, encouraging local sources of food, and more.
Documenting "globally oriented" recipes being made through social media.
Community Partnership:
Samantha Riley - Sustainability Project Manager for the Town of Ashland
The Ashland Sustainability Program operates here in Massachusetts and promotes the usage of clean energy in areas around Ashland. They also educate people on different methods of waste disposal, such as composting. I am partnering with the Ashland Sustainability Department through my environmental research aspect of this project. I was able to virtually meet with the Sustainability Project Manager Samantha Riley to discuss these topics in detail, and aid me in my research.
