Joining the Singapore Chemistry League 2024 was a rewarding experience, mirroring the engaging format of the previous year’s competition. This 4-hour online, open-book event allowed me to delve deeper into chemistry while collaborating with friends to tackle novel problems. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to work together and explore complex chemistry concepts in a supportive team environment. My passion for chemistry motivated me to participate again, and the competition reaffirmed my enthusiasm for the subject and its challenges.
seeNTU & H3 Chemistry Learning Day 2024
In SeeNTU 2024, I had the privilege of taking part in the course "Be a Molecular Detective for a Day," which offered an insightful blend of theory and hands-on experience with a benchtop NMR spectrometer. This experience was particularly significant as it built upon my prior knowledge from H3 Chemistry, allowing me to delve deeper into NMR spectroscopy.
The course provided a valuable opportunity to connect theoretical concepts with practical application, enhancing my understanding of how NMR spectroscopy is used in real-world scenarios. I found it deeply rewarding to see how the principles I had studied were applied in practice, enriching my learning experience and reinforcing my passion for chemistry. This hands-on approach not only clarified complex ideas but also ignited a deeper appreciation for the subject, underscoring the profound impact of practical experience in advancing my academic journey.
NUS Singapore National Crystal Growing Challenge
Participating in the NUS National Crystal Growing Challenge 2024 was an engaging and educational experience that deepened my understanding of crystallization. Throughout the challenge, I explored the chemical processes behind crystal formation and appreciated both the science and artistry involved in creating these fascinating structures.
Our task was to grow a Polyhedral Single Crystal with the most faces, which not only tested our practical skills but also provided insight into the intricate balance of conditions required for successful crystal growth. This hands-on activity allowed me to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, enhancing my appreciation for the beauty and complexity of crystallization.
Overall, the experience was both intellectually stimulating and creatively fulfilling, reinforcing my enthusiasm for chemistry and the science behind the crystals that surround us.
NTU LKC Anatomy Challenge
Participating in the NTU LKC Anatomy Challenge this year was a highly enriching experience that tested and expanded my knowledge of vascular and lymphatic anatomy. The event started with a warm welcome from the Chairperson and quickly progressed to a rigorous Individual Challenge, pushing my understanding of complex anatomical concepts. I managed to clinch the Certificate of Merit for the Individual Challenge.
One of the highlights was engaging with interactive booths set up by the LKCMedicine students and doctors. These hands-on activities, such as performing heart ultrasounds and learning intravenous therapy techniques, provided practical insights into the circulatory system. The introduction of a new booth featuring cutting-edge research by Assistant Professor Lynn Yap was particularly inspiring and offered a glimpse into the latest advancements in vascular science.
Overall, the challenge was both intellectually stimulating and practically informative, enhancing my appreciation for anatomy and deepening my interest in the field of medicine.
NUS Food Science & Technology Outreach Programme
Participating in the NUS Food Science & Technology Outreach Programme was a fulfilling experience that allowed me to dive deeper into a subject that I’ve always been passionate about—food. I have always loved cooking, often preparing meals for my family, so when I had the opportunity to learn about food science, I jumped at the chance.
The program opened my eyes to the fascinating work that food scientists do in developing healthier food alternatives, a topic that resonated with me as someone who cares about both nutrition and culinary creativity. It was inspiring to see how science can be applied to something as everyday as food to make it more nutritious while still retaining taste and appeal. This experience has broadened my understanding of the potential that food science holds, and I am excited to see where this knowledge can take me in the future.

Participating in the American Math Competition was a rewarding challenge that allowed me to engage with mathematical problems beyond my regular syllabus. The experience reinforced my enjoyment of solving intricate problems and highlighted the intellectual satisfaction derived from mathematical exploration. Overall, this competition was a stimulating opportunity that deepened my appreciation for the subject and further motivated my interest in pursuing advanced mathematical studies.
Singapore Chemistry Olympiad 2023
Starting from 3 August 2023, I started my weekly training for the Singapore Chemistry Olympiad (SChO) at school. I had been given the opportunity to expose myself to the world of Chemistry, stretch my mind and learn interesting Chemistry concepts. The training was done by an experienced external conductor. Beyond face-to-face sessions, I was also provided with resources for independent learning, which I utilised well. I learnt new things that were both inside and outside of my expected learning syllabus. Some of the topics taught were H3 level content whilst others are what I will be learning in J2. Through the weekly sessions, I grew more familiar with Chemistry related concepts and I was able to apply what I learnt during the training to my H2 Chemistry lessons. My love and interest for Chemistry grew deeper throughout the sessions, which spurred me to take up H3 Chemistry in 2024. All in all, I'm extremely grateful towards my teacher who has given me the opportunity to develop my knowledge and skills, and extend these further through the SChO training.

NUS Chem-E Challenge
Participating in a Chem E Challenge was an exhilarating experience filled with moments of intense problem-solving and collaboration. Our team poured our hearts and minds into the competition, facing quizzes that tested our knowledge, ingenuity, and ability to think on our feet. As we worked through the quizzes, I witnessed the power of teamwork in action. Each team member brought a unique perspective and set of skills to the table. Despite our best efforts, there were moments of uncertainty and doubt. Some questions stumped us, requiring us to think outside the box and consider unconventional approaches. We had a fun time doing other activities during the event though, such as doing experiments in NUS’ chem labs! Looking back, I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Chem E Challenge. It was a crucible that tested not just our technical knowledge, but also our determination and character. The experience has left an indelible mark on me, reminding me of the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and a passion for continuous learning.
