Classroom Expectations
BEHAVIOR:
First and foremost understand that ALL SCHOOL RULES APPLY IN THIS CLASSROOM. That being said, there are also other expectations that I feel need to be stressed they are:
1. Be in your seat with a pen or pencil ready and your notebook open when the bell rings.
2. Do not belittle or make fun of classmates.
3. Do not destroy, damage, or deface school property, my property, or your classmates' property.
4. Sign in and out every time you go somewhere (including date and time).
5. Do not talk while others are talking.
6. Do not cheat. You will not like nor can you afford the consequences.
ATTENDANCE:
Obviously the best way to deal with absences, is to not have any. In case of an absence it is expected that previously assigned work will be turned in the day you return. Absent students will have one day for each day missed to make-up an assignment missed in class. Students are to make up missed work outside of instructional time. I have tutoring/prep time during periods 3 and 7. I am also available most days after school if necessary.
In case of a mandated quarantine: Please notify me as soon as possible of your quarantine, so I know to set up and run a Google Meet or Canvas Conference for you to attend. During quarantine, you are expected to log in to the meet or conference and participate during class. If you are not in the meeting or conference, you will be considered absent.
GRADES:
This is simple. I grade based on points earned out of points possible. There is no curve. You get what you earn. Do the assignments, take notes in class, and study for your tests and you will do fine. Another note on grades—DO NOT CHEAT! Please read the procedures the English department created to deal with cheating and plagiarism issues AND SHARE IT WITH YOUR PARENTS. There is absolutely no reason to cheat in this class. If you don’t care enough about your grade to actually DO the assignment, don’t pretend. Also, in the real world, PLAGIARISM is not cheating. It is much worse. It is considered theft of intellectual property. Don’t believe me? Do a quick Google search (or Bing it, if you prefer).
MISCELLANEOUS IMPORTANT STUFF:
Check your email at least once a day. You live in the 21st century. You cannot escape your email.
Track your grade using the online SKYWARD account you will be provided. I will reset your password once for you if you need me to; just email me a request from your Google email account, and I will respond as quickly as I can.
If you notice a mistake on Skyward, please make an appointment during tutoring period or my prep period to discuss it. You can also take a screenshot and email that to me with an explanation of the error.
Progress reports will be sent home midway through each marking period.
Late work will be accepted for half credit as long as it doesn't become a habit and the work is submitted in a timely manner. If you earn 100% on a late assignment, you will receive a 50%. If you earn 70% on a late assignment, you will receive 35%.
Low Test Scores: Most tests will have remediation available. This is basically a “second chance” at the test. I take your original test score and your second chance score and average them together. The original test has a little more weight, but remediation will usually increase your grade.
I expect you to bring your chromebook to class every day (charge it each night). You may also bring a notebook every day to use for notes if you prefer writing to typing. Keep a daily review of what was discussed in class. If you are absent, check the board, the online agenda, or a classmate’s daily review to see what you missed.
Any formal written assignments (essays, take home tests, etc.) must be typed using size 12 Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins, and double spacing. The assignment should be formal in tone and style. I also want you to use the MLA format for your heading and citations. We will go over MLA format in class, but it should be mostly review at this point.
Any formal written assignments (essays, take home tests, etc.) must be typed using Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins, double spacing, and 12 pt. font. If you have any questions on how to do this, please ask.
IF YOU WANT TO BE IN AP OR HONORS ENGLISH NEXT YEAR, I have to sign a recommendation for you. You will be scheduling shortly after the second nine weeks ends.
I WILL NOT SIGN A RECOMMENDATION IF:
(AP) you do not have a cumulative average in my class of at least a 93%
(Honors) you do not have at least an 85% in Honors English 11 for both marking period 1 and 2.
(Academic to Honors) you do not have at least a 93% in Academic English 11 for both marking period 1 and 2.
