Mushroom Box

My mushroom box was inspired by my love of nature and cute woodland animals. Making this box, I was honestly unsure of how successful it would be. I remember when I placed the little frog on the top of the mushroom, and everything fell into place. Painting the box was my favorite part. It really brought everything to life, and I am so beyond happy with the results.

My Burnt Bowl

Making this bowl was an experience like no other. Every step of the process was something new that I hadn't done before. It began with stacking coils, then carving my designs, then painting, and lastly, firing. The firing of course was my favorite part, also the most harrowing part. After taking the bowl out of a 2000 degree kiln, it was glowing hot, and we set it in a tin of sawdust. As you could imagine, the sawdust immediately went up in flames, which would give the bowl it's distinct color and copper effect. After shutting the bin the put out the fire, we soaked the hot bowls in a large bucket of water. And then it was time, my bowl was revealed to me, and it was not what I expected at all. Despite the surprise, I loved it. The experience and the results were both something I will never forget.

Wheel Throwing

I was so excited to try the pottery wheel, and my expectations were reached when I finally was able to try it. Although I was not a natural wheel thrower, I had so much fun doing it. It was also a pretty relaxing experience as well. I would love to do it again, now that I have an idea how to do it. The paints we used for these bowls and mugs had glass chunks in them, which gave them the sort of tie-dye / rainbow effect, and I love that so much. I think the pinky-orange base with streaks of blue and yellow is so beautiful. I am super happy with the way my bowls and mug came out.

Cassette Tape

This cassette tape is made entirely out of foam! Making this project I had to restart twice, but I guess third time's a charm. I used a real cassette tape as my example as I carved it out. Then I painted it, which didn't take long considering that it's really only one color. The white details and the label are paint markers, so that was much easier than brush painting them. I chose to make this cassette tape a Beatles cassette tape, for no reason in particular, but I do love the Beatles.

Watercolor Lantern

When I first began to make this project, I did not particularly enjoy it. I found myself getting frustrated with the reeds breaking or not staying in place. Eventually things turned out alright with the reeds. Then it was time to put the tissue paper on, and I decided to use a combination of plain paper, colored paper, and tissue paper that I decided to make watercolor abstract-ish designs on. I actually really love this project now that I can see the final result, the process was tedious, but the results are beautiful.
