Clay Hexagon Box

The goal of this project was to make a hexagon-shaped box made out of clay. The design could be anything you wanted. And your lid could look any way you wanted to. When I first got my list of projects for the year I automatically thought that I would want to try and make all of my projects forest or fantasy-themed somehow. This proved to be easier said than done but I wasn't going to give up so easily. So I went on a safari and I looked up images to use as a reference for my box. I ended up choosing one and based my design on that but with a few detail there were different than the originals.

Raku Vase

The point of this project was the make a Raku Vase. A Raku Vase is when you fire lead-glazed pottery at low temperatures. We started making the pottery by getting coils of clay and blending them together. The vase had to be 12 inches wide or 12 inches tall. I made my vase 12 inches wide. When I was done blending the coils together I looked through google and Pinterest for example photos. I didn't find an exact one like the one I painted but I was inspired by one. I carved leaves into my vase and then sectioned the leaves off. I then painted it when the clay was dry so I could put it in the kiln.

Wheel Thrown Bowl and cup

For this project, we learned how to use the pottery wheel. Our goal was to make bowls and cups. There was no set number of how many per object. Once we had learned how to use the pottery wheel and we made our bowls/cups we let them dry. After we let them dry we had to shave them down. What I mean by that is that we have to use a machine that locks our pottery in place and spins it around. You use a tool to shave down uneven spots of the cup and bowl. After that, we were allowed to paint the objects in a certain layer of a glaze almost. There were two layers of the glaze and for the third layer, you paint a green thing on it. The pottery is then fired and you are done. This project was a free go and I had no reference photo for it.

Reed Lamp

This project's goal was to make a lamp for a choir concert. We had total free reign over the creative aspect of this project. I was going to make a replica of the lanterns from tangled but that would not have worked very well nor would it have looked very nice. So I made a circle pass and just went from there. I never really had an idea for this one and it was totally random but I am very happy with the results.

Foam Carving

This project was made out of a block of foam. I carved the foam and went from there with the simple idea of carving a book from scratch. I didn't have a specific book in mind but at the time I had a book in my hand and thought it would be a good idea because I like reading so much. So I drew the design out and then I used a saw to cut a big enough piece of foam off of an even bigger piece of foam. Next, I needed to use a machine in the back of the class to carve out the straight lines for the book and make a rectangle box. I carved the covering of the book by making a section of the book lower than the rest of it. I painted the book pink because my friend really likes the color and I thought it looked cute. For the color of the pages, I mix white for the base with half a pump of yellow and another half pump of brown.

Personal Logo

For this project, I had to make a logo that represented me. I started with a basic S shape and went from there. I was originally going to do a butterfly wing which is why there is the blue part on my project. I started to build the shape by using paper mache and then proceeded to paint the designs on it. I ended up painting flowers on my butterfly wings and on the other side of the wings is a night sky. I really like this project because it feels original and different.
