How Did Softball Benefit me off the field?
Growing up playing softball really helped me develop a sense of what teamwork means and how important it is. I have always been able to use this teamwork mentality when working in groups in class or even with coworkers at my adult job.
Being a club althlete growing up I definitly learned alot of my discipline and time managemnet skills from softball. Being commited to your teamates and yourself you need to learn to balance your school work, your friends all while being on time to practices and games 4-6 times a week. Its not just being on time to things its small things like learning when to go to sleep and when to wake up to get the right ammount of sleep. Making sure to leave at an apporopriate time to get places on time.
I beleive that softball is one of the sports for girls where it genuinly teaches resilience and perservence. It is not like basketball when you miss the shot and you get the rebound and can try again. It isnt like hockey where if you miss the puck you can go get it back. And it also isnt soccer where when you fall you get up and move on. In softball you really need to play the game not just with skills but with the right mentality. You need to have the confience when making a play and the assurance you will do the right thing. When you do the right thing it can mean everything to your teamates and coaches. When you fail however you need to be mentally prepared that mistakes happen and you have to understand you wont succeed at everything, everytime. Over the years softball has taught me when making mistakes to move on and keep a good attitude. If you let one mistake bring you down you will just keep making them. This also goes with confidence. Softball helped me build a confidence where if I work at something I will be able to do it even if I fail a little on the way. You can do great things if you believe you can.
Social skills and Friendships were easier to understand and maintain in a softball setting for me. Any sport as a girl will teach you alot of life lessons. You need to understand when playing a sport that once you walk on the field your teamates are your teamates and no matter how you feel off the field about them when you are on the field you need to trust them and be friendly with them. When it is practice and game times it doesnt matter who you are, everyone is everyones friend and everyone is socially involved to maintain a team culture. This skill can go far in life because it taught me that when you go to class or especially work as an adult you dont need to like everyone but you should definitely respect everyone and try and maintain a positive enviorment always.
Finally softball also really helped my mental well being and playing relieves stress for me. Doing any kind of physical activity like going to the gym or playing softball is a healthy way to unwind or clear your mind when stressed and mentally drained.
