Students may apply to NHS in the Spring of their SOPHOMORE or JUNIOR YEAR, but you can start the process as soon as you enter High School. Here is what you need to know:
SCHOLARSHIP: You must have and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5.
SERVICE: You must accumulate and verify at least 15 hours of community service during your high school career prior to acceptance to NHS. Hours served during middle school do not count. You may start counting hours at the beginning of the summer before your freshman year. Interim service projects or anything for which you have received credit or payment do not count. In other words, Student Council projects do not count unless you participated in things when you were not in the class. Helping family members does not count. A spreadsheet for documenting your hours is included in the application below. Note Regarding Service Hours: If you are a returning member and plan to complete service hours over the summer, you can turn your application in and note that you will complete the remainder of the hours by the start of school.
LEADERSHIP: You must have served in at least one leadership role in the school, church, the community, etc. during your high school career. You will verify your leadership by attaching a letter of recommendation with your application. Some examples of leadership are being a captain of an athletic team, a section leader in music classes, a Sunday school teacher, a youth group leader, or a student council member. It could also be as simple as taking on leadership in a classroom project.
CHARACTER: You must demonstrate good character by doing what is right. You must be a model student by not smoking, drinking, stealing, taking drugs, skipping class, cheating, bullying others, getting bad reports from teachers, etc.
Sophomores and Juniors can apply in the SPRING once their requirements are completed.
Incomplete or late applications will not be reviewed. Complete the application form no later than Friday, May 22nd 2026.
