The Birdwatcher (2024)
In The Birdwatcher I used symbols such as rocks to represent groundedness and being held back, ants to represent cycles and birds as symbols of escape and freedom. The character of the birdwatcher is made from rocks showing that they are weighed down and are in the forest searching for birds as signs of freedom. In the end, Liz, the creator of this animated world turns into the birdwatcher, finally seeing a bird as her animations escape the page.
The Birdwatcher was created through the stop-motion and digital animation of graphite drawings on tracing paper. The ending sequence additionally involves the stop-motion animation of clay ants in a physical room. This film is largely experimental in my use of animation techniques as I developed several different techniques based on what I wished to achieve for the film in my storyboard.
Inside Groove (2022)
During Anna’s routine visit to her grandfather’s nursing home, her relationship with him momentarily evolves from something silent, disconnected and seemingly stagnant to something more through the sweet exchange of a smile. Her desire for this kind of closeness is projected through her visions of him dancing in her head, to the music in her earphones. Spontaneously, or almost like she just can’t take this feeling anymore, she unplugs her earphones and releases the music into the room—an act of bravery, a push for change.
Maybe? (2023)
Maybe? is set in the near future in a world completely overwhelmed by its own complexity; where a regular state amongst people is decision-making paralysis. A hotline is set up for them to call in such a dilemma and on the other end is just one woman tasked with answering hundreds of calls at a time. The pressure of strangers' choices weighs down on her and the sound of the ringer becomes unbearable. Then, she decides to do the impossible. She stops giving them the answers they need and the world slowly comes to a halt. As people are forced to make choices again, take risks and accept uncertainty, the world starts up again and its beauty swells.
