For this feature, I had to conduct extensive background research. I collaborated with a new writer, so the interviewing, writing, and editing fell into my hands while also teaching them how to write a story journalistically.Â
For this feature, I wanted to highlight Ankeny High School's service dogs, while also educating people on the role of service dogs in school. I worked with a dog training facility to get accurate information about the duties of service dogs.
This story was written to bring attention to the resources that Ankeny can provide for people/families who are struggling. I timed it so it went right before the winter, a hard month for many families, while also mentioning the fear of SNAP benefits not being refunded. I spoke with the Executive Director of Family and Community Engagement and worked with a volunteer program to bring attention to the resources families have as options to help.
