DIRECTORS STATEMENT
"ANATOMIES.COM" combines elements of the uncanny and surreal to find humour and horror in the strangeness of the internet. This is a short film for the post-internet era. Gen-Z grew up as ‘digital natives’, and their desires are reflected in this film - a combination of cinematic and internet inspired elements. I am particularly fascinated with the way the uncanny aesthetics of the internet provoke new variants of horror. Similarly, internet ‘memes’ are examples of a newfound digital vernacular made to express irony. The language of the internet is quickly becoming the language of our everyday lives (photobooth, facetime and video games all appear in ANATOMIES.COM), yet the dominant forms of cinema still operate as if this language barely exists.
"ANATOMIES.COM" is my attempt to explore the role technology plays in mediating our reality, and the strange, surreal spaces that emerge from this.
BIO
Oliver Whitehouse is a Chinese-British director & writer based in Sydney (Eora).
His work moves fluidly between mediums to find new forms of audiovisual phenomena, drawing influence from experimental photography, obsolete technology, and the uncanny aesthetics of the internet. With a visual language marked by a sense of the surreal, he navigates spaces where memory becomes disembodied, and personal and collective histories coalesce.
His award winning projects, most notably experimental short MYTH (2024) & archival documentary Guangzhou.mp4 (2024) have screened at numerous insitutions and art galleries across Sydney and worldwide.
