The observation is the beginning of this program before teacher practice. In this activity, I observed my CT (Coordinating Teacher) Ma'am Tahiri Olat. She is a Biology Teacher, teaches grade 11 STEM in SLU Lab High School, handles 5 class from STEM A to STEM E. During the observation, I sit at the back of the class observed the class activity, teacher's and student's activity and also assisting in the laboratory activity.
From what I observed, Ma'am Tahiri Olat used the teacher-centered method while delivering the lesson to her students. This happens not without a reason since there are a lot of things that need to be explained to students, so Ma'am Taj mostly explains it in front of the class using the high-tech facilities the school provides. She always has a question and answer session at the end of the lesson to make sure, all of her students understand what they have learned in the time.
For the laboratory activity, she divided the students into eight groups and let the students discuss and do the lab activity together. Before the lab activity, I assisted her in preparing the apparatus students needed. She is a neat and thorough person and always makes sure all the group has their apparatus. She distributed the lab activity paper before the lab activity started to make sure the students already knew what to do in the laboratory.
The Learning materials used vary. In the classroom, the learning materials used are a slideable whiteboard with colored markers, a smart TV to present PowerPoint slides, instructional videos, images, and a textbook. While in the laboratory, the learning material used is the microscope. The interesting this is the number of microscopes used in one laboratory activity. There are about sixteen microscopes used during one laboratory activity, which is good because the students can make the lab activity way easier.
There is one thing unique I found about Ma'am Taj's teaching methods. It is how she always made it clear every time she explained something and she simplified her explanation so that all the students could understand the material.
The sources of learning in Biology are a General Biology textbook and the Campbell. The Teacher will make a PowerPoint presentation the day before and also the lab activity paper form. The presentation the teacher used is simple comprised of images, tables, and points of material. The lab activity paper form is composed of sources from the textbook and Campbell. The PowerPoint will presented using a Smart TV in classroom, while the lab activity paper form will be printed and given to the students before the day of the lab activity.
Assessment Ma'am Taj used for the general biology are quiz and lab activity report. For the quiz, she always makes HOTS (High Order Thinking Skill) questions to her students. She always mentioned the application of biology material in daily life. She always has a unique activity to do the quiz. Once she divided students into groups and gave them one small whiteboard to write their answers. It gives a competition vibe, and not only writes the answer, but she always asks her students to write the reason why they chose that answer.
