Inspiring Through Education: Stories of Teaching Abroad
Inspiring Through Education: Stories of Teaching Abroad
Hello, everyone!
My name is Rahma Luthfiani Harira Wahid. I am an English Education student at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, and I currently have the opportunity to participate in the SEA-Teacher program organized by SEAMEO. This program offers me a valuable opportunity to learn, teach, and gain a deeper understanding of the world of education abroad, specifically in the Philippines.
In this blog, I will share my experiences throughout the program, from school observations, preparing lesson plans, to teaching directly in the classroom. Additionally, I will include personal reflections, the challenges faced, and my impressions of the education system here.
Through this writing, I hope to provide an insight into my journey and inspire others who may wish to pursue a similar path in the future. Follow along, and I hope you find it beneficial!
1. School Profile
The Child Development Center (CDC) at Cavite State University (CvSU), Philippines, is an educational facility that focuses on early childhood development. CDC at CvSU provides educational services for preschool children, with the goal of supporting children’s physical, social, emotional, cognitive and language development. The programs offered are often based on child-centered learning methods, where children are encouraged to learn through play, experimentation, and exploration. This CDC is also often used as a learning laboratory for students in early childhood education study programs and other related fields at universities.
These students gain practical experience in teaching and managing a classroom of children through internship programs or other related activities at CDC. These facilities typically accept children from the surrounding community, giving them the opportunity to learn in an environment that supports holistic development and quality education.
2. Academic Support System
The Academic Support System at the Child Development Center is excellent. Can help students or academics achieve academic success through various forms of support such as academic guidance, educational counseling, access to learning resources, skills training, and technology support.
3. Teaching System
The teaching system is based on my observations. Child Development Center emphasizes quality early childhood education through a comprehensive approach. The curriculum includes interactive activities, educational play, and structured learning exercises designed to support children’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development.
1. Teaching Methods of The Teacher That You Observed
According to my observations, my associate teacher, Teacher Clarence B. Mallari, she is very professional, friendly, cheerful and disciplined when teaching. Through a friendly and cheerful attitude, she can create a safe, comfortable, and supportive learning environment. Her friendliness builds positive emotional connections, increases children’s engagement, fosters trust, and encourages social and emotional development.
2. Their Learning Materials and Innovation
Teachers use books as primary references in preparing teaching materials but also continuously innovate to create a more enjoyable and effective learning environment. In addition to combining various books to enrich the learning content, teachers introduce creative elements such as educational games and ice-breaking sessions. These games are designed to make students more relaxed and actively engaged in the learning process, while ice-breaking helps to ease the atmosphere and reduce tension, especially when students start feeling tired or bored.
Moreover, teachers utilize technology like PowerPoint (PPT) to deliver instructional materials. The use of PPT allows teachers to present information visually and in a structured manner, incorporating images, videos, and animations that make the content more engaging and easier to understand. With this approach, teachers aim for students to stay focused, enthusiastic, and motivated to learn without feeling bored or overwhelmed. The integration of games, ice-breaking, and visual media is a key part of modern teaching strategies, where student interaction and comfort are prioritized to ensure that the learning process becomes more effective and enjoyable.
3. Sources of Learning and Technology Used by The Teachers
The teacher utilizes various technologies to enhance the quality of classroom learning, one of which is the use of textbooks. Textbooks provide a theoretical foundation and structured material in line with the curriculum, serving as a primary reference for students and teachers in achieving learning objectives. Additionally, teachers also use Learning Management Systems (LMS), which facilitate access to information and make the teaching and learning process more organized and efficient.
The teacher also uses whiteboards and televisions in teaching, displaying images, graphics, and animations directly in front of the class, making the material more engaging and easier to understand. Lastly, multimedia resources, such as videos and interactive simulations, are frequently used by teachers to enrich students’ learning experiences. With multimedia, students can understand abstract concepts more easily through engaging and interactive visualizations, enhancing their engagement and comprehension of the material being taught.
4. Authentic Assessment Used by The Teachers
I found that the teacher effectively used authentic assessment through various creative activities such as coloring, drawing, and making miniatures from clay. In the coloring activity, students were given images related to the learning theme, such as flora and fauna, which allowed them to express their creativity while also understanding concepts of color and detail. Additionally, during the drawing activity, students were invited to depict their experiences or ideas, which helps the teacher assess their visual communication skills and understanding of the material. The activity of making miniatures from clay is also very engaging, as students can create objects relevant to the lesson, such as miniature planets in the solar system or sea animals, providing them with an opportunity to apply their knowledge practically. Through these various activities, the teacher not only evaluates technical skills but also encourages students to learn in a fun and meaningful way.
5. Others
The teacher awarded certificates to students as a form of appreciation for various achievements. Certificates were given not only to those with the highest academic performance but also to students who showed active participation, positive behavior, or significant improvement in their learning process. For instance, some students received certificates for excellent teamwork, while others were recognized for their dedication and perseverance, even if they hadn’t yet achieved the highest scores. There were also special certificates for students who demonstrated creativity or unique skills in their projects. By giving certificates, the teacher fostered a supportive environment where every student felt valued for their contributions. This approach not only motivated students to keep striving but also encouraged them to reflect on their own achievements and personal growth.
1. Curriculum
The curriculum at the Child Development Center (CDC) of Cavite State University generally focuses on the holistic development of children, emphasizing learning through play, social interaction, and the development of motor, cognitive, and emotional skills. The curriculum typically follows early childhood education guidelines aligned with national standards, while integrating cultural values and core competencies.
2. Teaching Plan Related to Your Major
I have independently developed my lesson plan with significant assistance from my cooperating teacher, Teacher Clarence. She has provided various relevant and useful references in the development of the materials I have planned. Additionally, I regularly consult with Teacher Clarence regarding my lesson plan to ensure its alignment and the quality of my teaching. Her feedback and support are invaluable in enhancing my professional competence as an educator.
3. Others
In my teaching plan, I utilize technology to enhance the teaching and learning process. One of the methods I employ is using PowerPoint (PPT) presentations displayed on a television. The use of PPT allows me to present material in a more visual and engaging way, helping students better understand the concepts. Additionally, the larger display on the television makes it easier for all students to see and follow the material, whether it be images, graphics, or text. I can also integrate relevant videos or animations, making the learning experience more interactive and dynamic. Thus, this use of technology not only enriches the learning experience but also encourages student engagement in the classroom.
1. Procedures of Teaching
The teaching practice process begins with classroom observation to understand the learning dynamics taking place. This is followed by teaching assistance and lesson plan preparation, which includes developing instructions and selecting appropriate teaching materials. At this stage, collaborating teachers provide valuable feedback and constructive suggestions to enhance the quality of the lesson plans developed. The next step involves implementing the planned teaching methods, concluding with a final demonstration and feedback from the teachers. During my teaching experience here, I felt profound satisfaction, amazement, and happiness, creating memorable moments that are unforgettable. I gained a wealth of new experiences and knowledge that I previously did not possess.

2. Time Management and Organizing Activities
My cooperating teacher gave me a timeable for teaching, usually before teaching practicals, my cooperating teacher Teacher Clarence B. Mallari told me to prepare.
• I have 40 minutes for each lesson
• To start, it takes 5 minutes
• To review the previous topic, it takes 5 minutes
• For my presentation, it takes 15 minutes
• For the assessment, it takes 10 minutes
• Closing, it takes 5 minutes
3. Classroom Management
By classroom management while teaching before starting the lesson, I gave the students a ice breaking for 3 minutes, then I ask the students questions about the previous topic to consolidate memory of the children. Then I ask about the topic that we will discuss on that day. I explain the lesson and also ask during my explanation to make sure children understanding. I use interesting media such as PowerPoint, picture, and video. Then I give the children assessment from their English books. After they doing their assessments, then I check and give the score on their assessments. And the last, I close the the lesson.
4. Problem Solving While Teaching and Staying in The Designated School
At first, I was a bit confused about teaching kindergarten children because my expertise is more in teaching secondary students. But I didn’t find it too difficult since I had taught kindergarten before. The challenge I faced was when the children asked for help in Tagalog, which made me a little confused. However, I kept trying to understand them and asked them to speak in English. This way, I was able to overcome the language problem and stay focused on teaching in the classroom.
5. Others
My practice teaching, once I have prepared my lesson plans, PowerPoint, and assignment that have been approved by my collaborating teacher. I have prepared a lesson plan filled with fun activities. The first material I taught was the introduction of new letters, namely W, X, Y, and Z. The lesson began with greetings and a prayer together. After that, I checked the students’ attendance. To start a cheerful learning atmosphere, I led an ice-breaking activity, moving their fingers while singing a simple song. Then, I reviewed the letters previously learned, such as Q, R, S, T, and V. Next, I introduced each new letter one by one. After that, the lesson continued with a discussion about family. I showed a picture of a family, and the children enthusiastically explained the roles of each family member, such as the father who works and the mother who takes care of the house.
To deepen their understanding, I displayed pictures, and the children were asked to match the pictures with the correct beginning letter. Afterward, they continued by writing the last letter of simple words. At the end of the lesson, I asked the children to recall the letters they had learned. They wrote the letters on the table with their fingers while mentioning words that began with those letters. Before closing the class, I gave an interesting homework assignment. The children were asked to find two objects at home that start with the letters W, X, Y, or Z, draw those objects, and write their names.
1. Purpose of Practicum
The goal of this practicum is to provide hands-on experience in applying effective teaching methods in the classroom. Through this activity, I can learn how to better manage the class, improve my interaction skills with students, and efficiently manage teaching time. In addition, the practicum provides an opportunity to design a structured lesson plan, use appropriate teaching media, and implement effective classroom management strategies. This practicum also aims to provide an understanding of different curricula and education systems, while encouraging creativity in developing innovative teaching methods.
2. Procedures of Practicum
The practicum begins with classroom observation for one week. During this stage, I observe various teaching techniques used by the mentor teacher and the interaction patterns between the teacher and students. Afterward, I create a lesson plan that includes learning objectives, teaching methods, and assessment tools. The mentor teacher gives feedback for improving the plan. After revising, I carry out a teaching session, applying the planned methods. The practicum concludes with feedback from the mentor teacher and a discussion about the teaching experience, which provides insights and suggestions for future improvement.
3. Outcome of Practicum
The benefits of this practicum are diverse, both professionally and personally. Professionally, this practicum has helped me develop teaching skills, from designing lesson plans, selecting appropriate teaching methods, to adjusting instructions to meet student needs. Additionally, I have learned to manage a classroom more effectively, including time management during lessons, handling unexpected situations, and creating a conducive learning environment. This practicum has also provided me with an in-depth understanding of the K-12 curriculum and how it is applied in everyday teaching, while enhancing my English skills, particularly in academic contexts and classroom interactions. I have also become more confident in delivering teaching sessions and adapting to classroom dynamics.
4. The challenge of Practicum
I think one of the biggest challenges might be adapting to the different education system and teaching methods in the Philippines. However, I am confident that my ability to adapt and my willingness to learn will help me overcome this challenge. I approach this experience with an open mind, observe and learn from local students, and ask for feedback to keep improving. Also, my English skills help me communicate and interact with the local community.
5. Overall Impression
First, I want to thank Allah SWT who has given me the opportunity to take part in this program. Also to my parents who always support and pray for me all the time. Also to my University, Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta which has helped all participants in preparing all their needs while participating in this program, and my friends who have given me a lot of support.
During teaching in the Philippines as part of the SEA-Teacher program, I was fully immersed in the local education system and culture. From the beginning, I was excited to experience firsthand how education is implemented in a different country. Every day in the classroom provided valuable learning opportunities, helping me refine my teaching methods and adapt to a new environment.
In addition to improving my teaching skills, I also gained a deeper understanding of the Philippine education system and its unique approach to student engagement. The students were very friendly and eager to learn, which motivated me even more.
Outside of the classroom, I had the opportunity to introduce Indonesian culture to my peers here, sparking meaningful conversations about our cultural differences and similarities. Building relationships with fellow educators and students from diverse backgrounds has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the program. This experience has enriched my personal and professional life, and I look forward to applying all that I have learned in my teaching career in Indonesia.
6. Suggestions for The Future Improvement
Hopefully, this program can expand collaboration with Southeast Asian countries, add technology training in teaching, extend the internship duration for greater affectiveness, build an alumni network, and provide more indepth cultural orientation for participants.
