How many courses will I have in each  semester?

There will be four courses in each semester.

How do I find a tutor at the school for extra help  with homework? 

Teachers hold extra help sessions upon request and Northview has a tutoring club that will be up and running once the school year begins.  See the club directory near Room 101 for information.

Will I be getting a calendar organizer/agenda?

No, but you can always buy your own or use the calendar app on your phone.  Finding a way to stay organized and keep track of your schedule and assignments is an important key to success.

Will there be shorter days of school on some particular days?

Yes, typically the two last Wednesdays of each month are late start where school starts at 9:55 am. You can find these dates in the weekly Northview newsletter, or by checking the school calendar on the TDSB Connects App.

Will we have access to lockers?

Yes, you are assigned a locker every year.  Grade 9's will be given a lock for their locker that they can use throughout their high school career.

Will the school provide a laptop for me?

Yes, all students get a Chromebook that they keep with them throughout high school. Your parents must opt-in for you to receive one through a form that will be sent out via email.

Are there after-school clubs or sports?

Yes, club meetings are held during lunch or after school, and practice for sports teams is held before or after school. Stay tuned for sports team sign up and try out announcements.  Go to Clubs & Programs to learn more about clubs.

Do students need a laptop for note-taking, or do we have binders/notebooks for that?

Students can take notes using their preferred method.

What food options are available in the cafeteria? 

The weekly Northview Newsletter contains the weekly menu.  Northview is proud to be able to offer a great selection of food at lunch through our Culinary Arts program and classes.

What is the dress code?

You have the freedom of choice as long as it does not promote or symbolize hate, discrimination, and profanity. Refer to the TDSB Dress Policy for more information. 

How long is a school day?

A regular school day begins at 9:00 AM and ends at 3:15 PM. Lunch starts at 11:40 AM and ends at 12:40 PM. Students get 5 minutes to get to their next class. Classes are 75 minutes long.

Does this school have advanced placement courses?

No, but you can talk to your guidance counselor to learn more about course offerings and preparing for the future.

Are schedules offered to the students on the first day? 

Students should get their schedules on August 30 via TDSB Connects. Go to Online Tools to learn how to access it.

What I should do if I need to miss school for sports?

Inform your teachers as soon as you can and they will let you know how you can make up. If the activity is school-related, you will be excused. 

Can I eat in class?

It depends on the teacher, but food should be consumed before arriving at class. 

For gym class, is swimming mandatory?

Swimming is a component of our Physical Education program.  If you have concerns, speak to your Phys. Ed teacher.

Is it still possible to change one of my courses? 

Typically changes will not be offered for grade 9 and 10 students unless there are extenuating circumstances. Book an appointment with your guidance counsellor to learn more. However, the first week of school appointments are not available, but course change request forms can be picked up from the Guidance Office.

Do the courses that I get on Brightspace include the room numbers of the teachers?

No, the room number will be available on TDSB Connects.

What is the curriculum and which books do I need to have prepared?

The curriculum for each course will be identified in course outlines distributed in class. Your teacher will distribute all textbooks and will indicate materials needed for the class.

How can you get a TDSB school email if you don't have one already?

Speak to the school librarian for assistance.

Do you have any language support for an English beginner?

Northview offers ESL courses and programming.. Book an appointment with your guidance counsellor to learn more. 

Are you required to be in dance class to join dance club?

No, anyone can join the dance club.

What school supplies do I have to get for the fall semester?

Your teachers will inform you what you need for each class on the first day of school.

Are all the HMST  students in the same class?

No, there are multiple HMST classes.  In grade 9, the classes that will be HMST specific are Math, Learning Strategies, Science and Geography.
