Making friends is scary.
Or so I thought. There are many ways to make friends. The school might be big and intimidating, but the students there aren’t. Finding my first friends seemed hard and I desperately wanted to find someone I knew in school. You might have friends from your middle school, but you may not have them in all of your classes. That was the issue in my situation. I was barely in any classes with my closest friends. The only solution was finding new people to hang out with in class and potentially outside of class. The thought scared me; just going up to people and beginning a conversation right off the bat? No way!
But, it is possible. Teachers, for example, are a big help when it comes to making friends. They bring you together with other peers in partner and group activities which is a great way to start a conversation with people you don’t know! Humberside is all about inclusion, so even if you don’t talk in group discussions, you’re always encouraged to; this fosters a sense of belonging. Signing up for clubs and extracurriculars is a way to get involved with the school and meet new people.
I hope this gives you some confidence or motivation to meet someone or try something new. You realize how easy it is to talk to people after you take that first step. Even if you are shy or have other issues holding you back, there will always be at least one person to make you feel better.
“It’s only after you’ve stepped out of your comfort zone that you begin to change, grow, and transform.”
