Synopsis:
With winter looming, a small northern Anishinaabe community goes dark. Cut off from power and cmmunication with no foreseeable resolution, only very few residents truly realize the community's short-falls. When unexpected visitors arrive, escaping the crumbling society to the south, tensions rise and allegiances are divided. The harsh winter months pas slowly, and the food supply dwindles as the deat toll and panic rise, but the greatest threat to the survival of the reserve might come from within the community itself.
Summary
Moon of the crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice follows Evan Whitesky, who embodies the paradox of modern Indigenous life, through the northern Anishinaabe community’s survival of an apocalyptic crisis. As the town gets ready to survive the long-lasting, harsh winter, the community faces blackout and even loses contact with everywhere else. Things begin to get even worse with the invasions of the survivors from the South and the community's resource shortage. As they struggle through the crisis, they slowly lose their grip on Anishinaabe identity and culture.
